8686 Le Marche at Easter?

I would be grateful of some advise regarding the mist in Le Marche. We spent our Christmas holidays touring round and had a wonderful time. Whilst in the south we went to Ripatransone, which was really beautiful, from what we could see! Unfortunately there was a thick mist / fog and visibility was very poor. It did not seem to be much better the following day, but when we drove an hour north it had cleared and was brilliant sunshine, is this just because of the lower altitude? I understand that it is common in the area - is it usually a few days at a time or is it a daily occurrence in the winter? We have booked another short trip over Easter and are considering diverting back to the area to try and get a better look and explore a little more, but as it is so early this year perhaps it is best until later in the year? We are hoping to make it back in the summer. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

That mist! yes it was pretty bad and made driving difficult, we are at 420m and were in the thick of it, but the mountains were beautifully sunny and down at sea level all was clear. Today and yesterday here close to Montegiorgio it was 13c with a hot wind and lovely sunshine, but weather here can change in minutes. I would hope by Easter that the mists have gone, but then again it could be snowing!. I would look at the long range weather forecast and plan accordingly.

Many thanks, will check the forcasts and webcams nearer the time. Thick mist here in London in the park yesterday morning, started me off thinking of our next trip and wishing Easter would arrive quicker!

yes ,it can be quite common especially in November and December but after January is less common.Don't forget however that easter is very early this year and March can still be pretty cold although its quite warm and sunny at the moment.

We usually manage to eat our easter family lunch in the garden at easter. However check one of the weather sites for up to a week in advance, there's a link on the front page of our web site to three of the italian weather sites.

If we don't get any more snow, it looks likely for a beautiful easter as the blossom is already coming on some of our fruit trees. There is also usually the flower pictures on the cobbles in san ginesio as part of the religious festivals.

However I am biased about marche for any time of the year as there is always something in our changing landscape and scenery.

Before moving out here 4 years ago (Petritoli, not too far from Ripatransone) I read that the mist was at its worst during November and the last 2 weeks of February. That seems to have been the norm until this year. We have had a beautiful sunny February with barely a hint of mist. I have heard that Ripatransone is particularly bad and it is probably due to its altitude. I was there on sunday and I could see the sea and the mountains deep down in Abruzzo. It was quite beautiful.
Do not be put off by your last visit. It was just bad timing. South Le Marche is for me is far more beautiful than further north. Well worth another visit!

The great thing about being near mountains is that the weather can change very quickly - and you can see it coming! The first time we saw the house we eventually bought, you could hardly see your hand in front of your face, and had to take on trust that there was a panorama of the Sibillini mountains.

You can get several days at a time of poor visibility, but then when it clears it's all the more dramatic

Tuesday it was between 15-20 C and clear blue skies, today it is about 5 C and dreary. The weather can definitely change when we are this close to the sea and the mountains. Last Easter we did a picnic in the hills near Palmiano but this year easter is much earlier. Plan for the worst...hope for the best.

Chris,
We have lived full time in the city centre of Ripatransone for 18 months and the fog/mist has not been common during that time. We had snow before Christmas and the odd misty wet day since but on the whole we have had good weather. For weeks, until Wednesday of this week when the rain arrived, I have walked our dog around the town and enjoyed the amazing views from our fantastic position. As you enter Ripatransone and drive past the hotel Piceno the view to your left across the valley to the mountains and then as the road curves around the view to the coast is absolutely breathtaking. I still smile very smuggly to myself every day when I look at those views. Photographs just do not do it justice and whenever we have friends come out they understand why we could leave our beautiful timber framed thatched "chocolate box" cottage in suffolk so easily.

Quick weather update. Monday- felt like summer. Tuesday- a bit cloudy. Wednesday- starting raining. Thursday- 4 inches of snow in Montalto (though we are lower down so it just rained as everywhere else). Friday- rained some more- land slides everywhere- low cloud- clouldn't see a bloomin' thing.Stopped raining at 4pm. Today- beautiful clear skies and sunshine. My point- I would bring some t-shirts, a ski jacket, umbrella & sunglasses and you may be somewhat prepared for what the weather may do while you are here!
