It may also depend whether anyone gets car sick! If so head for the motorway

Agree that the SS81 is best suited for those with time to spare and passengers with hardy constitutions.
However, I have taken guests that way a few times just for the sake of the "Wows!" I get out of them when I point out Civitella del Tronto perched on its hilltop. Interesting place to visit, too, if you have the time.

We always take the SS81, I find it is quicker than going to the coast then up and inland again. The road does have a lot of curves but some great views.
If you are coming from Rome to AP the quickest route is on the SS4, Via Salaria. There are 2 sections that have a lot of curves but most of it is good road and you can go from the GRA to AP in just over 2 hours.
Can anyone tell me the quickest way to get from Teramo to Ascoli on the basis I am coming on the motorway from Rome. Is it quicker to go down to Guilinova and then onto to Ascoli or it is better to come off Teramo and cut across to Ascoli?
Thanks
we always go down to the A.14 ,especially since a fast road more or less connects the two motorways, then come off at Pedaso -straight thru to Amandola.
the te-ap road is pretty aweful.
