9103 Hi - Another new member!

I've just found this website by accident today and felt compelled to sign up. We bought an old farmhouse in Tuscany (nr Barga) about 5 years ago and it's now fully refurbished, but there is always more to do! I need to browse through the other forums but my main priority right now is finding out about registering a UK car in Italy and if anyone has any knowledge of this process it would be great to hear from you.

Hi Steve and welcome.
Look under the Legal section on Bringing our cars to Italy. Hopefully you will find out the answer.

Hi Steve

Hi Steve,
Welcome to the Forum. We are not very far away from you. Currently restoring an old watermill at Bagni di Lucca.
You will find plenty of answers to your questions if you do a little search through the Forum threads.
Best wishes with all your projects.

Don't, is my advice. I've been driving on a foreign number plate for 4 years no problem at a quarter of the costs I'd have here!

Thanks for the pointer to the "Legal" forum - that's given me lots of food for thought!

Thankyou for this advice - it looks like to do this legitimately is a real hassle so I might follow your example. One question though - do you drive it back to the UK to get an MOT - or can you get an equivalent cerfificate in Italy?

Fantastic! - this link has saved me so much work. Many thanks indeed. It looks like it's a real can of worms but I think I'll start with Stuart Collins and see what they suggest.

I've made it slightly more complicated. I've got my car registered on a friends name in Germany. I do drive it back there for an MOT, but only need to this every 2 years.

We used Stuart Collins, but we took the insurance out on our UK address initially and yes you do have to have the car MOT'd as and when required, so therefore taxed as well. No good driving back in a UK registered vehicle and getting stopped by the police and subsequently fined as well for no tax disc!!!
I know of one UK guy who was resident here, that was consistently stopped by the Carabinieri, until he re-registered his vehicle. Another German friend hides his car most of the time in the garage, uses it only to go back for holidays etc and rides a Italian registered motorbike for his main use.
Remember if you are a resident then the local police know you are here!!!!

True, but the people in our village don't tend to let any police in, so they never bother us .

You must live in Fort Knox then, otherwise Mafia land!

So if the police dont come into your village Heiko, how do they then get to see their Nonna?
