Thanks Sally,
we are about 10 mins from Casoli, on the east side of the mountains in a small hamlet called Guerrena vichio. We have viisted the area on a number of occassions and would be interested to hear from anyone within this locality. We hope to complete next week and are looking forward to cracking on with things.

Hi Sarah & Adam. The topic of heating has been discussed many times in the forums. If just a holiday home then gas, either GPL or town is a good option for the summer months. If you are thinking of winter, then you have to realise that approx 80% is going to heat the house.

Thanks Geotherm, I'll have a look at the related topics. Just beginning to find my way around the site.
:yes:hi my name is sarah. My husband (Adam) and I are in the process of buying a house in the unspoilt area of Abruzzo. A holiday home at the moment but who knows in the future! Lots of work needed to make it habitable so any advice as to local DIY providers and/or furniture stores etc would be most welcome. At present we have someone overseeing this work for us but hope to do some of it ourselves. Would also appreciate advice on heating as we hope to use this in the winter. Only looking to heat 2 main rooms and 3 bedrooms. Looking for most cost effective!
Look forward to hearing from others in the area.
Sarah, hope you don't mind, but we are a little behind U2... So did you use an estate agent and which area did you end up in? We are visiting Abruzzo for the 1st time in May (Teramo area) and will probably look at property.... Good luck with the heating question by the way... Sound like gas is expensive, so a lot of wood is burnt...

This has been our first full time winter in Abruzzo...and may I say how bloody long (but much of the time lovely) and cold it`s seemed...and yet I`m reliably informed that this year has been a mild one!!!
Gas is expensive - and lectric too...but there`s alot of lovely heartwarming stuff that happens out here for free!!!

Yes it was a little chilly in early January and indeed in the first week of December when it snowed. On the whole though mild but not as mild as the previous winter.
However yes although gas and electricity are expensive, certainly there's plenty out there which is good for one's soul Just one example, quite often, in the pasticceria when I'm buying bread, the signora behind the counter, will slip in a little cake or two gratis. Wonderful eh!!!

Just a quick update. Our, far too brief, visit to Abruzzo last week went very smoothly and we are now the proud owners of what us Scots would describe as a bothy! ie no water, electric just a roof and four walls but who cares? not us! We can't wait to start making it our own and getting back out in a few weeks.
Not only did we buy our house but we had a couple of fantastic days skiing, just what the doctor ordered!
no doubt I'll be back searching for advice and have already taken on board much of what has been posted re heating.
A presto:winki:

Hi Sarah
I've just posted my own introduction and noticed you're also moving to Abruzzo! My husband and I are moving to Tagliacozzo (1 hr east of Rome). Although I don't know your village I've been to Guardiagrele and around there and thought it was absolutely beautiful. We're going to Tagliacozzo because we have to be commutable to Rome for work. Regarding your heating question: I noticed lots of Italians go in for wood pellet stoves in quite a big way. Not only are they beautiful and very ambient but also apparently very economical. I know only PIAZZETTA stoves (which I think are the Rolls Royce of wood pellet stoves - there may be cheaper makes just as good out there). if you know a good architect/surveyor you can recommend who would come to Tagliacozzo pls let me know.
All the best
Sonia
A big welcome Sarah and Adam to The Forum. Whereabouts is your house??? I have friends who did a lot of the restoration themselves of their house which is 10 minutes from Sulmona.
