I have a truly Italian name, first, 3 middle names, and surname -- it was fairly hellish growing up even in New York City with a diverse population -- but WHAT a surprise how much it has helped me in Italy -- opens doors, brings a smile, people are always interested to know where my family's from, etc., etc.

Maybe that's too the way for non-Italians looking for work in Italy!!! Deed Poll but perhaps there are restrictions on what you can change your name to in the UK.

Why "Mathematician"???

Hi Sally
Did you spot the profs name................Wiseman..........bit early for aprils fools .........lol

My surname derives from a latin word that relates to mathematics, plus it's most of what I do for a living, as a quant analyst/trend spotter, which is a pretty cool job.

I think that I could beat a few records in this area, as I have 7 Christian names and, according to Spanish law, I have to use two family names, my father's and my mother's, in that order. If I was to write the lot, I need 62 letters!!!!
Anyway, I did not choose any of those for my pen name, but there are several reasons for my choice which may be of interest to other members.
I chose the name of Aelia Galla Placidia, but in its Spanish version, Gala Placidia, because:
a) I am Spanish
b) As a child I used to admire an old Spanish etching that was at my parents' home which depicted Aelia Galla Placidia paraded as a hostage by King Alaric and I always loved the expression in the face of the princess, it was a mixture of horror and desperation, the way she must have felt chained (even if the chains were allegedly made of gold) to the reins of Alaric's horse.
c) My husband's Italian family is from Ravenna, where her mausoleum stands and is nowadays a Unesco World Heritage Site.
d) She was a devout Christian and so I am
e) From her portrait (see my avatar) she obviously liked pearls and I always wear a pearl necklace and earrings. (i do not look like her, though)
If you are interested in her story, which is a fascinating one, you can have a look at:

or

And I recommend you to visit her mausoleum, if you go near Ravenna.

My middle name is Mora which is from my mother's maiden name - Mora-Szorc which is Polish I' alas don't particularly care for it nor indeed Sally. I went through a phase at art school, where I called myself Sarah for about a year. Anyone know the Italian equivalent for either or both???.

Sarah is spelt Sara in Italian, without the h at the end. (Same spelling and pronunciation in Spanish)
I do not think that there is a translation for both Sally or Mora.
