9203 Kitchens

Any ideas for kitchen suppliers? We went to a furniture shop outside Sarnano which had a couple of nice ones but it looked really expensive stuff (& I have decided I won't spend more on the kitchen in Italy than I spent on the one here in the UK). Will take a look at Ikea (and that does have the advantage of being able to look here rather than wait until we are next in Italy) but if anyone has any other ideas...

Have a look at www.mondoconvenienza.it
They do not have a store in Le Marche, but they do have in Perugia and in Pescara.
Do a bit of search through the threads as there is plenty of information about this topic.

Emmezeta near to the Ancona IKEA seem to have a good selection at reasonable prices - cannot comment on quality as have not looked that closely - not sure if they have a website, but would no doubt come up on Google if they do.

Hi Jepson
There are a couple of places in Civitanova, we had one made there, about 4.5 metres long, hob, oven, fridge, sink etc, was about 5k euros fitted.

IKEA kitchens come with at least a 10 year guarantee. In my case they sent duplicate pieces so rather than wait my kitchen "fitter" had to improvise in my absence.

Also it was initially sent to another house by mistake causing a delay of a couple of months so make sure they have full contact details and told where your property is exactly.

They have their own kitchen fitters too. I can't remember how much.

This too is a good place for kitchens. Unlike IKEA, ready assembled, similar prices and they fit the kitchen as part of the overall cost. - Mondo Convenienza | Arredamento e Mobili per la tua casa

This is a list of manufacturers that I bookmarked -

No worries, Sally, but Mondo Convenienza charges 8% "trasporto e montaggio" not included in the price of the kitchen.

Thanks for all the suggestiosn - the big problme I have is that we are in the UK and the nature of my job (I am an academic) means that I won't get out to Italy for anything much more than a weekend until July by which time the house will be finished. I've seen a few postings about using local shops but don't know of any around our area. We asked our bathroom supply guy (Stefanao in Amandola who has amazing prices) what he suggested & all he cousl suggest for cabinets was Ikea.

In your case, it sounds as if IKEA could be the solution.

Hi Jepsonclough

As mentioned on another post to Adrian, I think, we had a kitchen fitted in our absence by Pianesi who are based in Corridonia. I can thoroughly recommend their work, and we have found them to be reliable and trustworthy. Ask for Andrea Pianesi who does speak some English. If you pm me I will send you some photos of our kitchen. Website is www.pianesimobili.it
Annie.

We are very pleased with our bit of IKEA kitchen furniture - a huge 3-drawer affair which soaks up all pots, pans, cutlery and crockery. The rest of the kitchen is a muratore - and a bit of modern storage with smoothly running drawers is a very welcome addition.

Mind you, it took two men (one a builder) most of the day to put it together. Don't want to stereotype, jepson, but as an academic, do you do DIY?????

PS - Stefano Lucozzi is magic!!

Mine took two handymen plus a carpenter to cut out the holes for the hob and sink. When I returned to pay I was asked for another €100 for the carpenter's work ..... Did he get it??? No way.

IKEA kitchens are tricky to assemble and fit at the best of times but as we all know walls in Italy tend not to be at right angles!!! lol

Well I am handy with a hammer & more willing to give it a go than my husband (who isn't an academic) - comes from having my own house when I was 22 and my parents were 200 miles away so there was no-one I could call on to knock a nail into a wall/assemble furntirure etc. Before we were married when we lived in London I went into an electrical supply shop to buy 4m of 2 core and 4 m of 3 core and the guy in the shop didn't want to sell it to me "because if it isn't what your husband wants we won't take it back". Needless to say he got the sort of mouthful that only a 25 year old woman can give!:wideeyed:
I haven't always been an academic - in a previous life I was an accoutant (who aren't known for their diy skills either!

We are in a similar position to you. House is just outside Amandola and should be completed by end of June. Have chosen bathrooms but yet to choose kitchen.

I went to the Mondo in Pescara a few weeks ago ( it is very easy to find ) when I was out in Italy and the kitchens look very nice. I did try some of the drawers and thought that they were a bit flimsy. However, lots of people have said that the quality is very good. I thought that the bedroom furniture was of good quality.

I think it very hard to get around more than a couple of kitchen shops in a day and as I don't have any design flare I would like someone to come to the house and do some designs. If you are not there very often it makes it very difficult.

I am going out to Amandola during the Whit holiday with the wife and kids at the end of May to try and get something sorted.

I should perhaps add that our IKEA is the freestanding variety - so no concerns about making it close-fitting

Chris - accountants rock! (speaking as a lawyer myself)

Hi Anne
We've looked in the Ikea catalogue at the freestanding cabinets but I'm not sure how they work - do they have a built in worktop (in which case that rules out stone - and saves money!). We have one wall (about 4m) which needs cupboards and the other wall need a sink unit (because of where the gas & water are coming in we don't have much flexibility). My husband likes the idea of separate units which we could mix with old stuff (if we find any) but I'm not sure.
Think I need a trip to Warrington Ikea to have a look...
Chris

Chris, get the special "Kitchens" catalogue from Ikea Warrington. You can make a plan of the area with it and have a bit of a play with the different modules until you see how the puzzle works out. The worktop is ordered according to your needs and you have different choices. I ended up having a custom made kitchen by a cabinetmaker because of the difficulties of my kitchen space (small, windows in odd places and below normal heights, etc.) but I liked the IKEA kitchens as well as the Mondo Convenienza ones.

i have nothing against the ikea brand but i do find it a strange option as regards cost and convenience...

we know a couple that ordered from there...paid for delivery and had the whole lot left in a field a couple of kms away from their house because the lorry driver couldn't be bothered to follow a detour because on of the roads to the house was closed for roadworks...

not only that it entailed at least three visits to actually get all the bits and pieces required... some were missing and god knows how many phone calls in italian at premium line rates...

we have now had three kitchens installed by our local furniture shop... basically you phone them up and say you want a kitchen... the owner comes out and measures the walls and where all the service fittings are...he then takes you back to his shop and you go through various catalogues or off to his showroom and choose the style... he then either does a hand drawn layout...or some manufactures have computer software to generate 3d images...whichever way and i prefer his drawings you see the kitchen come to life...

he then checks delivery dates... a normal kitchen can be from around 1 week...and fitting dates... he combines this with builders who have to either do tile back and or plumbing works...etc ... and the kitchen is then delivered fitted and after a bit you get a bill... before that he visits and checks everything is working fine...

our lowest cost kitchen was around the e2000... the highest around e7000.. they come with as many appliances as you want... and the quality you require in all stiles... the tops are cut to measure...from his measurements and the people that first the thing sweep up afterwards...

my ikea couple took three days of work to fit theirs...had to get a local with a van to fetch it from the field and the top because it was a standard measure doesn't quite get there.... also despite working out all the pipes and drains and connections etc... because they do not do this all their lives it took quite a bit of adjusting to get everything fitted...

saying that i do hate flat packs but use them if i think i can save money ... and with kitchens to my mind it just doesn't work that way... maybe we are lucky with our person .. i don't know... even better he speaks english...well enough to get by on furniture kitchen designs...

Colonna Arredamenti srl 127 via nazionale (val vomano) 0861 650370

that's the address and phone number... basically i guess little use for the person that started the thread... but its the stile of shop i would go with.... and maybe helpful for anyone of you living in the province of teramo...

me ... i would skip the chains...or the out of town sheds... heck we even have a whole comune here in abruzzo at mosciano dedicated to furniture making

see map link ... there are about thirty to forty factory outlets none that i could recommend because i have not used them... but its there

i prefer local ... i like the fact that we can give the shop the key and they come and do the work anytime...i like the fact we have never been asked for money up front or billed on delivery... i like the fact he comes and checks we are happy and i just love not having to read flat pack instructions

Actually, you gave the best advice. A kitchen is something complicated to install and you can spend lots of money chasing bits and pieces and installers. With a local kitchen shop, as you say, you just give them the key and they organise everything. This is what we did... it may be a bit more expensive, depending on what you order, but you save lots of money in the long run. We also bought our appliances locally. The guy came and installed, checked them.... we only had to go to see him, pay and pick up the keys.

Our Ikea kitchen fitters were dreadful, the first really surley Italians I had met, (apart from the guy in the lotto shop in Piano di Falerone) bought wrong fittings and when the drill broke they went home in a tantrum, we had to make numerous phone calls, use our own plumber and builder to connect services and Robert had to fit the back plates, oh and our very helpful electrician sussed out how to fit the fridge door.
Having said that the kitchen looks very good, I just would never use Ikea again to fit it.
A

Just remembered that in fact we bought our freestanding cabinet in UK and shipped it out with other stuff.

It came with worktop and everything but we weren't trying to install sinks etc so it was all pretty simple. The "builder" who put it together was my bro-in-law (part of a deal for a free holiday!)

Others who have used local kitchen companies all talk of how easy it was and how well installed ( usually included in the price), so that might be the better route.

I'd still make a trip to Warrington though.....

Would rather use a local firm but so far have only know of a shop in Sarnano which had v expensive furniture plus kitchens, If anyone has a suggestion of a local supplier then please let me know.

Hello,
If your interested I had handmade kitchen pieces made for me by a carpenter Friend of mine. His name is Tonino and his little factory is just outside Sarnano. He makes loads of item for me and others who I do jobs for.
Now most of those items are expensive handmade in either oak or chestnut, but he also does kitchen finished in laminate and they are very reasonably priced. Only just more expensive than Ikea, but way better quality.
Pm me if you want his contact number.
