As for access to Abruzzo from Viterbo, yes, the journey a lot longer, but it does avoid the Rome ring-road and that's always a great idea.

Yes Allan but it's nice also to be able to stop of in Rome for a few hours prior to departure. The coach journey from Tiburtina to Sulmona takes just under two hours. I have done that journey loads of times and only once was I caught in traffic jams. Why??? It was July 31st and everyone was leaving Rome on holiday.
And very inconvenient also for those who then travel to Abruzzo. There are not enough flights to Pescara so many a time I fly to Rome. i wonder though in view on Alitalia's imminent demise whether the Italian Government isn't shooting themselves in the foot by threatening to curtail Ryanair's flights to Ciampino..
