You could always take a car across, which is probably easiest from Pozzuoli which you can get to from the north without driving through Naples.
Without a car, one reasonably easy way would be an InterCity train from Rome to the South. These call at Napoli Mergellina, taking under two hours. Checking train times is easier and quicker on the German rail site than on Trenitalia: TravelService - Query page
The boat site is as follows: Medmar - Collegamenti con navi traghetto | Prenota subito 0813334411
I imagine someone else will think of an even better way!
Happy memories. Long time since I've been to Ischia.

Having just properly read the Medmar website I posted yesterday, I notice that the departure point for Naples-Ischia boats seems to have been transferred as of February this year from Mergellina to the Porta di Massa.
So the nearest train station is now Napoli Centrale. Sorry!

Thank you so much for your reply. How easy is it to get to the embarcation place from Napoli Centrale - can you walk or is it best to go by taxi. Thanks.

I have walked this in the past, though in rather younger and fitter days. It's probably a bit over 2 kilometres, and a lot is downhill. But unless you're in your twenties with a backpack, a taxi might be more comfortable.
I notice that there are more lines than Medmar that do the crossing nowadays, incuding some with the faster aliscafi (hydrofoils). We have done the trip from Rome to Capri many times (last time two Summers ago) and always took the train to Naples, getting off at Mergellina and then walking down the hill to the hydrofoil. There were always crossings to Ischia too - it would be a real shame if we had to go via Napoli Centrale next time as I certainly wouldn't fancy the walk(with luggage, children and probably in the sun!) to the port in central Naples. Do let us know how you get on.
I guess train this where my family comes from.A village called Sentinella which is also my surname!!
