9307 Hire car dilemma

Embarassingly, this happened to me a few weeks ago...
I arrived at an airport in Italy on my own, Friday afternoon, for a long weekend of catching up on a few jobs at the house, picked up the hire car [brand new Fiat Panda with 25km on the clock] and off I went.

I decided to do some food shopping on the way, so I stopped off at a supermarket. Did the shopping, came out, opened the boot and threw the bags in. Took my jacket off and threw that in also. Closed the boot.
Great, I thought. All the shopping done. I won't need to go anywhere all weekend. Right, let's go. Hang on. Where's the keys? Jacket pocket? Where's my jacket? Oh s**t! :reallyembarrassed:

So keys, wallet, phone, bags, money... everything in the car and I can't get into it. I'm in the corner of a not too busy supermarket car park jumping up and down like John Cleese; cursing, swearing at myself for being so stupid and wondering what to do next.
About 10 minutes later, still in a rage, I decided there was only one realistic course of action. So, checking to make sure there was no-one looking and no obvious sign of any cameras, I picked up a large rock and hammered one of the rear side windows a few times until it caved in. Got in. Got the keys. Job done. Now I need to get back to the car hire office at the airport. Before setting off, I picked out the remainder of the glass in the window so it wouldn't fall out all over the motorway.

Driving back to the airport I began pondering on what I'd done and I started wondering whether to tell the car hire guys the truth or whether I should make something [slightly less embarassing] up. Financially, I didn't really care how much it cost. It couldn't be that much, surely, but I just wondered whether I'd taken the right course of action. To top it all off, it was then I noticed the large gash on my finger and the blood dripping all over the gear stick and the dash. Could things get any worse? I had to pull over, clean it all up and dress my finger as best I could. By now, I just wanted to go home.

Finally I get back to the car hire office [injured hand firmly in pocket] and, before I knew what I was doing [delayed shock?], I told the guy on duty that I'd stopped to do some shopping and when I came out I found that the window had been smashed. Thankfully, I said, nothing had been taken from the car. Maybe they'd been disturbed.
The guy came outside and had a look around the car, inside and out. "Look! This is what they used. B*****ds!"; showing me the large rock he'd just found on the floor in the back of the car. I'd forgotten about the rock!
According to him, this kind of thing happened to their customers 2 or 3 times a week (car break-ins) and he couldn't have been more helpful; asking if I was ok, whether I wanted to report it to the police etc. etc. So, I started feeling guilty about lying to him. I then felt even worse when he started apologising for the behaviour of some Italian people these days and coming to the conclusion that they were probably on drugs or something. Get me out of here!

Anyway, within 20 minutes or so he got me another car and I was on my way. Straight home. Billed later, €108, for the window. Not too bad.

If this kind of thing sounds familiar to anyone, what did [B]you[/B] do? Or, if not, what would you have done? I suppose I'm just hoping that somebody's already been through this and I'm not the only eejit on the planet.
