9380 Gecko or newt

What is the correct name for the wonderful creatures that crawl over our land and on our houses in the summer?

Neither I think, we have loads of lizards, greeny brown and very fast movers and there seem to be some slightly bigger and more green down the lane. I think geckos are renowned for running around upside down on glass surfaces inside houses. Their 'sticky' feet make use of the weak molecular force, fascinating but useless fact for today!

you don't say where you are - I was about to say lizards but ON your house? Our lizards scuttle around, sunning themselves on walls and tiles but I have never seen them on the house. Newts live in water don't they? I have to be honest, i don't know what a gecko is exactly

If they are active mainly at night (there are day gecko's), have big eyes, post-it-note feet, and hang around your lights and activly hunt flies & moths they are gecko's. The local pronounciation is "jekki". They come plain or coloured.

They are very cute but in warm countries are a nightmare for computer equipment & electrical goods, crawling inside to lay eggs or hide during the day and getting blown-up or jamming mechanisms. They will also catch & eat each other

If you're in the South, you may indeed have geckos, although they are predominantly nocturnal. I've never seen one in the wild, but would very much like to.

There are several species of european lizard that you're likely to see sunning themselves on walls and tiles. I remember once seeing a big glue-green fellow that was easily 35cm long, perhaps even more.

I'm a big lizard fan.

Ours are called friends and family, they come looking for free hoildays, they too play havoc with the computers also the drinks cabinet, ice maker and garden furniture.

Was this what you mean, I think these are called Common Lizards.

This little fellow lives with us down in Puglia, catching flies and other titbits

Yes the little dark brown ones are lucertole( Lacerta muralis) wall-lizards. They are found all over Italy and elsewhere in Europe. There are also much larger ones, often bright green colour that I'm told are called salamandra and I get them in my garden - they are about 10"-12" long and look something like this (NOT my photo - I'm not quick enough...)

Excellent! That made me laugh.

I was delighted to find the eggs lizards had laid in our builder's sand pile. The are the size of children's sweets and slightly soft and opaque. I tried to keep them to show some children but after a couple of days they shrink like small balloons.

Our lizards are often on the house, and they're excellent vertical climbers. There's regular traffic up and down the house walls, and they also seem to enjoy playing football in the roof space (no it's not mice or rats). Every so often they also attempt to fly by falling off the balcony where there's no wall underneath, though this never seems to do them any harm.
