9412 An Italian Weekend... In New York

Just back from my recent trip, I had a lovely time with my eldest daughter which included an Italian weekend as follows

Saturday night: "Un ballo in maschera" by Verdi at the Metropolitan Opera House, more information at:

A fabulous opera with a great cast, including Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky in the role of Renato, who deserved all the applause.
By the way, the Metropolitan does direct broadcast of the operas in many countries, have a look at:

Sunday morning: Mass at 11 am at St Anthony's Church in Soho, the church that most of the Italian community goes to in New York. Founded in 1864 by the Franciscan Friars to cater for the needs of Italians in New York. You can read the whole history here: Home
Not very many people attending as most Catholics were at the Stadium because of the Pope's visit.

Sunday evening: Dinner at "Peasant", a great Italian restaurant at Nolita, "Little Italy's" quarter in New York. Excellent mainly Tuscan food, menus in Italian (which causes more than one problem to non-speakers" and great atmosphere. Again, you can get "envious" by looking at their web: Peasant
Strongly recommended.
