My take on this stuff, also on the cost of gas and electricity in Italy, is that Italy - ahead of its time - actually has an energy policy. This is nothing to do with global warming (it has been in place far too long) but more to do with energy security (or an attemt to avoid energy insecurity). It is probably also a useful attempt to support the vest industry...not the petrol costs you will understand, but the gas price to the consumer is greatly reduced if the consumer wears a vest.
Is it perhaps a bogus "chain letter" e-mail attempting to cash in on the name of Grillo for some fake authenticity?
(Shell and Esso certainly aren't one company, and today's gas station price in the USA for 5 litres would work out at just over €3, not €0.75)
