If its 4 years old, its probably not worth [in strictly financial terms] repairing - unless you can find a local 'geek' who can do it.
Suggest you 'back up' everything as soon as possible [unless it is fully dead already]

I see no reason why your local computer shop said no way, other than they want you to buy a new computer Angie. If the part required isn't obsolete then they could order it for you. What they seem to ignore is that you may well have valuable data on it that you don't want to loose.

.
100% agree with all of that. A perfect-condition 4-year-old Compaq is worth €125 at best. Fixing yours commercially is going to cost at least a substantial portion of that.
If you can find your geek (and I know because I'm one) he would have no problem repairing it.

We too are on the look out for a 'geek' to fix one of our computers - it has been to the local computer shop on a couple of occasions and each time has come back no better. So if you do find one I would be grateful for contact details! If we find one, will let you know!

Well if you have transferred everything to another computer, why not take the Compaq apart yourself? It doesn't sound like a problem which needs special 'bits' to fix - so why not go in for a little computer pathology, you will probably surprise yourself with what you can do!

get a "hobbyist" soldering iron (i.e. on with a fine bit), open it up, find the wobbly bit and you have a 70% chance of mending it yourself if it's just the connection onto the PCB mounting that's loose. if it's a crack on the PCB itself or within a moulded partetc. it may need a replacement part (at which point I'd give up unless you can find that geek).

Hi Angie and Robert,
if you let me know the Compaq model no. I can ask my son who has an IT business here in UK.If it is just a part that needs replacing he may have it amongst all the other bits of computers in his warehouse!!

All above good advice but 4 years old is definitely long in the tooth and I would definitely consider replacement anyway. The prices for laptops are getting more competitive and XP is often cheaper and possibly better as Vista is turning out to be a bit of a disaster. There's even a Linux option by Asus at v competitive prices altho' the geek factor might be a bit high.
Have a look at the Compaq website Angie and perhaps contact them if you cannot find the information you seek. Compaq - È tutto più semplice grazie ai computer desktop, ai notebook e agli accessori Presario. There is also an English website..
