Would this be of any further help in finding an answer?? I am an American married to a British national in the military and we are going to Italy in July for a two year assignment. Although the military will pay for any necessary visas/stamps they have been no help what so ever finding which one if any I need. I have already visited the link you posted however there doesn't seem to be an option particular to me. Since I am staying over 90 days and not "joining a spouse" as we will be traveling together with our daughter.( Because both hubby and daughter are EU nationals they do not need any visas.) We have been told that within three days of arrival we need to apply for Permesso Di Soggiorno which gives permission to stay in Italy but everything I have read on the Italian consulate websites gives conflicting information. This has all become very frustrating to say the least. I just want/need to know if any further visas are required as time is drawing near and i still can't find an answer...

The link Nick gives you is from the actual Italian government website so I would imagine accurate information and I think answers your question.. However if not contact The Italian Embassy or Consulates here in the UK. (Or/And The American Embassy in London).
As for the Permesso Di Soggiorno, again go by the information that the Italian Consulates give on their website. Three days then you have to register??? I know the Italian bureaucracy is bad, but not that bad!!! lol

Check the link again. It's "ACCOMPANYING FAMILY MEMBER - JOINING FAMILY MEMBER"
You do need a visa but it's just proving you're really married. Much easier then the other visas.

Have a look at the American Embassy in Rome website for details as to what is required - link above.

NICKZ_When I click on the "accompanying family -joining family "the only visa that comes up is the Schengen visa. I am under the impression that this is only good for 90 days? I have visited the US consulate, the British consulate and the Italian consulate web sites as well as called all three and am just as confused as I started out. All of the web sites direct me to pages that seem to conflict what I just read. When I call the consulate I am directed to another one. I have the direct number for the man in charge at the Italian consulate and he was no help either. Everyone directs me to someone else. I don't know if it's because I am American living in UK moving to Itay that is confusing them?? Perfect example of beurocracy at it's best I think...LOL! What has everyone else already present and living in Italy had to do to reside there???

You are clicking on the link near the top that states:
Do you need a visa?
I wish the site let you give direct links :eerr:

Does sound a nightmare and I sympathise. Okay then contact The American Embassy in Rome. You might as well. Also there is a website called Expats in Italy - Moving to Italy and Living in Italy Information which could just help you. I think it's basically run by Americans for Americans as is http:/www.amiciovertheocean.com. Hope they are of use to you.
Ah I see the second one might have problems. I therefore suggest you might contact Carole B here by pm and she might tell you when the website is is likely to be working again

NICKZ- I get the same thing but when I click on the link beside
1. visa appliction form(click here)
it opens up a Schengen visa app form. Am I to assue that I need the Schengen for entry and then go register myself for the Permessio Di Siogorrnio (sp?) and that will entitle me to be "resident" for my two year stay?Thank you for trying to help Im sorry I am not trying to be a pain but I have never experienced such a stressful move in my life and I have moved around with military my entire life. The visa issue is only the tip of the problems we have encountered along the way...I just want to scream at this point...LOL
Anne-Thank you that site seemed a little more helpful but again it just brings up the Schengen visa when I put in my details.

Perhaps it is just the Schengen visa that you require initially. Why not phone the American Embassy in Rome, they may be able to give a clearer picture as to what is required? I know under the NATO agreement there are different PdS/residence requirements for military personnel and their families posted to Italy so if I were you I'd get the basic entry visa and then deal with the next step once in country. Once there I am sure someone on base will be able to assist with the next step, if there is one!

That's the problem. The way the website is setup I can't figure out how to copy a direct link :veryconfused:
Click on do you need a visa near the top of the page and just fill in the info.

Oh. I didn't try that link.
I think the problem with the UK consulate is most people in the UK don't need a visa. It's like asking somebody in Florida the best way to make a snowman. :laughs:
If it's any comfort you've got it easier then the average US citizen.
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
Thank you Sally I will give that a try.

NICKZ-HaHaHa...That at least gave me a giggle for the day!!! Thank you for your help!!!

Okay found the form that you are referring to. Stupid or what eh??? Eh the link of course!!! lol I think I would actually ring The Italian Consulate in whichever UK city pronto given I read you have to apply weeks in advance. Please let us know what the outcome is.

If hubby is serving in the British Military and is being posted to Italy, can you not ask your Families Officer to help? I'm sure it will not be the first time they have had to deal with this sort of thing.
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
NEILO_ We have tried that route and over the phone the families officer sounded as if he could and would help but when hubby went to personally see him he basically told hubby it would be better to sort it himself because I am American and to let him know how we did it!!! Unfortunately, we are not getting much help from the military. Would probably not be a problem if I was British..lol..(they seem to have all info for that) So their help is as much use as a chocolate fire guard. :nah:
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
Actually on reflection Italy is a Schengen country so that is why that appears on the online application form. It's fine. Just fill it in. You don't have a problem.

This information may be relevant:
Ministry of Foreign Affairs - Foreign Nationals - Consular Services
Note what they say about family members of military personnel under NATO treaty.
Nevertheless, I would insist with the Consulate and I would do it in writing asking them to respond in the same manner. Then you have proof of the advice given.
You don't give enough info for anybody to really answer. Instead go to:
Ministero degli Affari Esteri - Visti
Follow the do you need a visa link.
Unless you're staying more then 90 days in France or Spain no visa needed for the trip
