9370 Removals

Don't want to re-invent the wheel-we are thinking of moving some furniture and personal possessions to VENETO around September. Can anyone recommend self drive van hire company/ removal company that they found reasonable.Don't suppose there is any way of driving left hand drive vehicle one way and saving the journey back to blighty ?
Any help much appreciated

Hi there
We looked at loads of possibilities in terms of moving stuff from the UK to Italy and in the end decided it would be cheaper (and more fun) to buy our own van and do it ourselves. So we are now the proud owners of a transit-sized van and plan to take things across in a few trips, using the time to see some parts of Italy we would otherwise never get to.

We have bought quite a lot of the bigger pieces of furniture across in Italy though so if you're intending to move out lock, stock and barrel I would think a removal firm would be your best bet.

We've said before on this site that we can possibly take small objects for people on the way down (or on the way back for that matter!) - our UK house is near Liverpool and our Italian house is in Le Marche. Do send us a personal message if you think we could help out. We did also have a 'best of the bunch' choice we would have made if we'd decided to go with a removals firm so again, if that would be helpful PM us. I would give the details here but I think it may be advertising so want to avoid it.

There are a couple of other threads about it here, if you type 'removals' or something similar into the site search it should come up with them (I think).

Hope you get sorted - it can be a minefield!

Sorry, I also meant to say - one of the options we explored was hiring a van in the UK. Don't even think about it - it's massively expensive to take hired vans into mainland Europe and a lot of more local (and therefore cheaper) rental companies won't even contemplate it. You can't drive one way and leave it either, even with the larger companies.

We did think of flying into Europe somewhere, hiring a van there, bringing it back to the UK, loading it up, driving it to Italy and then dropping it off in Europe wherever we hired it from ... then we decided we were going mad so we just bought one!

Many thanks for your replies. We are getting to the planning stage now-have thought about hiring a LHD in Calais, driving back through tunnel as we live in SE,loading up and leaving van ifor collection n Italy which I think is possible.I know you're not supposed to officially !

I believe most of the larger hire companies on mainland Europe allow you to leave the hired vehicle in most other mainland countries for this service there is an additional charge but from what I can remember it is not extortionate. I hired a car in Germany and left it in Prague I believe the repatriation charge was 50euro.

Why not try my trick, Hire a van, tell them you are moving and need the vehicle registration for a tempory parking permit for your street, then go book your ferries with the registration number not forgeting to visit AA.com and get european recovery and some extra insurance just to cover your back ! Its a bit 'Naughty' but saves about £500 and away you go

Thanks for this suggestion.Did you hire a lhd van and ,if so, from where-presumably Calais ?

Am I being thick here ?If you hire a rhd van in UK,it has to be returned and therefore becomes uneconomic surely

And - did you get the owners' [hire company] permission to take it abroad?
