Just to add to the posts re Shopping Online using Italian websites. We have purchased specialist Italian maps online but these are not available any other way. As for anything else, I found the experience disappointing. For articles that we would buy from UK online cos. or from Amazon, I could find no Italian sites selling similar up to date models. Last week I was on the web searching for about 16 hours in all!!! The Italian Online sites sold old out dated models time and time again. Example. We lost 2 cordless phones due to lightning and wanted to replace them. The phones we had were frustrating to use for various reasons and so I spent a great deal of time researching what to buy next using the web. I then tried to track down the model using Italian Online shopping sites and Italian Kelkoo. The manufacturer I had chosen was Panasonic, repeatedly only models out of the ark were available or those that came up with poor reviews. I am not convinced that Online Shopping in Italy compares to Online Shopping in the UK. Finally we decided to buy from Amazon as they had best price and to get friends to bring them when they come by car.

Wonder if Amazon do garden furniture then ..... The reason for my original long, and tiresome, fruitless search on Google. I need very simple contemporary chairs and table, preferably metal and not too expensive,

Well Sally if you were near Perugia I could tell you about several places. Importers of Terracotta pots around here also sell iron garden furniture. Marino Fa Mercato do bargain garden furniture too. Where are you? We seem to be a very helpful group of people on the Forum.

misco [I guess that's www.misco.it ] has various electronic things. Prices tend to be okay and lots of different stuff. I forget who misco is in the UK but they are Tiger in North America. I think Tiger is right.

A little unfair there, I would venture to suggest, Noble. I have used many on-line shopping websites here in Italy over the past few years and have never had any problem finding what I am looking for. There are, indeed, a few consumer products that are sold here which are not available in the UK - and vice versa. However, the same situation would apply in any other country, such as the US vs UK for similar product categories.

Amazon are very useful for English language books, DVDs, etc. Otherwise, there is Mediaworld, ePrice, Mr Price, Euronics, ePlaza, etc - all of whom I have used without any problem. In fact, if it comes to being "ahead of the pack", the Apple iPhone has been available fairly freely here for 3 or 4 months - unlocked! It will be official after TIM launch it - similarly unlocked (the first country in the world where it is possible to, legally, buy one).

Otherwise, white goods, as well as black, are always different in different countries - most often without any actual product difference other than slight cosmetic changes. Global marketing and all that!

My advice is to buy here. At least if - or when - the item breaks, crashes, stops working, you can get it fixed without a drama or an additional flight "back home". Live with it, really. Italy is very well up there when it comes to fashionable electronics - often ahead of the UK, in fact.

Of course, if your problem is language, that is another issue altogether and one that isn't the fault of any Italian supplier.

The only hint worth giving you is to use the Italian Google (or whatever) for your searching and use the Italian names/descriptions of the product. That will help enormously in your quest. Otherwise the cost of living here will rapidly become silly, as will the aggravation factor when things start breaking down. Good luck though.

Good comment Nardini and I do take your point. When in Rome etc. I am half Italian..say no more...You have listed all the sites that I have previously searched. The example I gave was trying to find a cordless phone. The previous one was less than perfect, so I checked the Which report and went for their recommendation that fitted my requirements. (I don't want state of the art technology or the latest gadget just a cordless phone plus 2 handsets, that functions well). No site could sell me Panasonic's up to date model, nor could Mediaworld or Euronics etc. So if you can now help me to find 2 small stereo speakers (ideally to fit in two corners of the room) from an Italian Online shopping site, I would be truly greatful. I have come unstuck again.

Excellent site....I had not found Misco...thanks so much Nick, will look at the site later. Fingers crossed they have what I am looking for. Has anyone used them or can anyone comment on their service please?

I've bought from them a few times. Don't expect them to answer emails but put the order in and the stuff shows up. It's possible to make the order COD so no risks. Check the site I'm fairly sure they have an UK outlet. Maybe a different name but same company.

Yes - Misco do have a UK outlet. We use them regularly where I work. www.misco.co.uk should anyone want it.

Well sometimes people who have been married a very long time do not communicate verbally...or so it seems in our house! I am informed that Misco is on my other half's Favourites and he did infact search their site for the cordless phone before I took up the task, (he'd had quite enough searching after 1 hour grazie). Moral of this tale, if you cannot find it the first time leave it 2 weeks or so and search again, at least when using an Italian online shopping site. Seperate computers can have disadvantages!
