9495 Wisteria

I inherited a beautiful pale Wisteria when I bought my house five years ago here in Alto Lazio.
Every year there has been the most delightful show of flowers - the plant trails for about 15 metres - but this year there are only a few very sad looking 'grapole'.
My question - Is it normal for Wisterias to have a resting year? :veryconfused:

they don't take a rest year but to maximise the flowering and the size of flowers they need to be pruned at least once a year in august/september cut back to above second bud from the main stem. I have 5 wisteria and in addition to the above, all through the summer I cut off the long wavy new growth.

To promote flowering it is essential to prune wisteria twice a year. The first hard pruning should be in August /September, which provides access to the elements and enables the growth to harden. The wisteria will grow again and should be cut back at the end of December/January to promote the flowers - I usually leave 4 buds.

Thank you for your replies - seems the secret's in the pruning.

Interesting site you reccomended Alan h - not only for Wisteria . . I've a lot to study!
