9512 Can anyone recommend a holiday language school

My wife and I are interested in a "working" holiday this year! We thought that a holiday where we could learn a little of the language would be a good idea prior to moving permanantly to Italy. The sort of place we are looking for should serve great food, have small classes and border on the luxurious. Somewhere near an airport, we fly from Stansted, would also be an added benifit.

Have a look at the 'Grand Tourist' web site - there is a link from the front page of this site. I know of the house where they run their 'Italian in Style' courses - have no idea about the actual courses but the house is certainly luxurious ~ approx 40 mins from Ancona airport.

I believe there is a language school in Tropea (Calabria) and you can fly in there from Stansted to Lamezia Terme (SUF).

Hello Mickchick, a few years ago I was in charge of international marketing for an important English language school in Australia and I am a retired teacher of foreign languages, so I think that I can give you some general advice on the courses you are seeking.
First of all, you have to find the right language school and that means one with small classes (preferably less than 10 students), well qualified instructors, acknowledged by the Italian Ministry of Education and using modern methods and equipment. You are not going to find luxury in those schools, only excellence in teaching methods.
What you learn in the classroom should be complemented by an immersion in the language, that is to say the possibility to continue practising what you learn in the classroom. Certainly, you could rent an apartment or go to a luxury hotel, but you will not get that sort of environment. The best way would be homestay with an Italian family as this will certainly help you to consolidate language skills.
I advise you to concentrate on a couple of good schools, well located in areas where standard, educated Italian is spoken (preferably no local dialects as to hear those spoken on the streets will only confuse you) and ask them what they can do for you, explaining your own requirements. Most important schools have their own homestay department which can match students requests with local families. Bologna and Florence (Tuscany in general) should cater for these needs as they are important destinations for students of Italian.
Start with a search through the Internet on "Italian language schools".
And remember... the more time you spend...the more you learn.
I wish you all the best in your endeavours.

Hi again, this old thread may be helpful

If the location demands a lack of local dialect then I should not refer you to the language school in Tropea.
