9251 hotel in verona

[I have stayed before at the hotel Accademia [url=http://www.accademiavr.it/eng/index.html]Hotel Accademia Verona - in the center of Verona[/url]
which is approx 5 mins walk from the Arena. The rooms were spacious and we had excellent service in the hotel. highly recommended!

[COLOR=black]In Spring 2006 we stayed 2 nights at [B][U]TORCOLO[/U][/B] - Vicola Listone 3, 37121 Verona, IT Phone: 045 800 7512 Fax 045 8004058. A small, (19 rooms) centrally located hotel, walking distance to everything. Inexpensive (I believe we paid EU110 per night. It was very clean, nothing fancy, but for the amount of time we spent in the room (sleeping) it was a find. They offer a variety of room sizes all with private bath, phone, TV, A/C, and hairdrier. Very friendly, owned and operated by two lovely women - SIlvia and Diana were most accomodating. Breakfast was included. We found the hotel from a travel book purchased in 2000, "Charming Small Hotel Guide of Italy". The properties are listed by region, all given price catagories. We've visited at least 35 over the years and never had an unpleasant stay. (Many have been repeat visits). Have a great trip![/COLOR]

I've stayed at the Torcolo too - the owners are really helpful and its 2 mins from the Arena. We were there in May 2004 and the weather was evil - torrential rain for 3 days. We decided to splash out and go for a splendid lunch and asked the sister owners where best to go. They argued between themselves for 5 mins then agreed on one place and remembered it was closed that day, another 5 min argument and they came up with the 12 apostles restaurant. Not cheap (be careful with the dessert wine prices) but truly wonderful and they even took us around the roman basement too.
The Torcolo is not flashy at all and I think its more expensive in Opera times (but so is prob every other hotel in Verona at that time) but it is perfectly comfortable and brilliantly positioned..

I obviously didn't move quick enough to book Torvolo. that's fully booked when we need to book.

Any other recommendations for Verona or lake Garda?

We are travelling there by train and have tickets for the Opera on one evening. Therefore we either need to stay in Verona or close by at the lake but then I guess we would need to be sure of transport back to the hotel after the opera. Any suggestions or experiences of trying to get back to the lake after the opera will be most welcome.

If you are not renting a car I would certainly try to stay in Verona the night you are going to the opera. A few years ago we were in Malcesine and it was impossible to get back afterwards unless you were prepared to try to get hold of a taxi - along with 100's of others. There is an added risk that many of the taxi dirvers are not prepared to drive out to the lake. We ended up having to book a package, opera ticket with coach to and fro as it was the only way it could be done without a car, there is no public transport available.
Unfortunately, despite having subsequently lived in Verona, cannot recommend a hotel as we never needed one! Have a look on kayak.com, Expedia or e-bookers for availabilty and Trip Advisor for reports.

Some other 'opera tips ' ~ do buy the candles, they add to the atmosphere ~ do rent a cushion (numb bum syndrome sets in pretty soon if you are on a stone seat) ~ decant any drinks into plastic bottles - no glass is allowed, and they do patrol to check ~ get there early, it fills up quickly especially the better view stone seats.

I am sure others will have other tips to add. It is a wonderful experience so enjoy!

I'm still having trouble locating a hotel/ B&B in Verona in August for 3 nights. The ones I have tried are fully booked. Does anyone else have any suggestions for somewhere close the the Arena so it's walkable after the opera? I'm not really looking for some international hotel but something more Italian.

An update on my search for a Verona hotel within walking distance of the Arena for the opera.

Eventually booked a B&B "Alla galleria" [url=http://www.bedandbreakfastallagalleria.com/index.html]Alla Galleria Bed and Breakfast[/url]

It was a pretty good location 2 minutes from the Arena and central for walking to all the major places of interest in verona. You could walk from the station (Cars are not recommended in verona) but we caught the bus from the station to piazza bra for 1 Euro 20. The room was on the 3rd floor with 2 others located above some shops and was an annex to the antifeatro B&B about 20 metres down the street.

Ideal for the opera as ours finished at 1am so no idea how you manage to get anywhere outside walking distance. The room was large and had a good bathroom and it was all clean and comfortable.

They collect the rubbish in Verona about 6 am every day so probably wherever you stay with open windows due to the heat you'll have to get used to the noise of the collections in the narrow streets

It's an alternative to hotels in Verona if you are sightseeing or going in the opera season
