Loos, their finding, their quality and their cleanliness became increasingly important to my partner and me as she became increasingly pregnant late last year and early this.
Our conclusion is that a public municipal loo (if you can find one) is likely to be pretty dire and bar-cafes as a rule have one that will be reasonable, but the most dependable location for clean, functional toilets is shopping centres.
Such places aren't thick on the ground in Italy, they do lack atmosphere and all the shops seem to be selling the same shoes, but they always seem to have a recently cleaned toilet.

Errrm, I am not sure I should really make this comment, but if you can, errm, find a MacDonalds they have pretty slick loos. Most Agip ristoros on the motorways are well equipped with clean ones (though carry your own paper and don't expect a seat on the loo).

Wouldn't like to name and shame but thought the following incident may raise a smile.
Last summer my husband, daughter and I visited a local restaurant. Towards the end of the meal my daugter disappeared to the loo and was gone for ages. When she finally appeared and we left we asked her what the problem had been.
It appeared that she had entered a cubicle only to find the loo absolutely filthy but before she could exit some Italian girls came in. As she didn't want them to think she had been responsible for the dreadful state she proceeded to clean the loo, then when she had finished that - and with the other girls having gone - she also cleaned the loo next door and the wash basins! We are not normally an OCD family but we did laugh at what the restaurant owner must have thought!

Slightly off topic, but on a recent UK tour I visited a few new bars that had opened. These were deisgner bars where a bottle of beer requires you to remortgage the farm. So not underage drinker venues.
What suprised me was they all had warnings on the hot water tap....'The water may be hot!' Its not the first time I have seen this. Is this the law in the UK now? Trust someone to drive a car, but not with washing their hands safely.

It's the "I'll sue you if I possibly can" society Nigel. The signs declaring that hot water may acually be hot is the standard defence these days for "Bring it on".

Nobody seems to have mentioned the delight of entering a bar toilet to find a hole in the floor......just about bearable in the summer whilst wearing a skirt........not so much fun in the winter in trousers!! There is one in Lapedona and another in Montelparo.....neither have toilet paper. And if anybody picked up my scarf from the one in M.Elparo (obviously I didn't want to pee on it!), I would really like it back!!
