Saw our first fireflies ata small complex outside Panzano several years ago.
The other six apartments were occupied by German families, who were very nice - they saved sunloungers for us!
Since they all had young children, they stayed in at night, and unfortunately, I didn't have the German skills to tell them to take the kids into the woods to see them.
Magical to see them though.

They turn up round us in Marche at exactly this time and last till about the end of June. They are fantastic - like something out of Harry Potter. Wish I could do that with my bum!!

There are trillions of them in the woods and fields in our hamlet in June, and they come onto our terrace. Our evening entertainment is following this "firework display". I'm sure they must have something to do with the tales of people following fairies into the woods and disappearing. Clumps of them sort of jump a little bit further away when you approach them.
I think they only flash(!) in the mating season.

Yes we get lots of fireflies on hot early summer evenings but i haven't seen a glow worm in Italy yet.

sorry Jo, lapsed into early '80's UK TV cartoons there for a minute ... there was a program called "willo the wisp" much beloved by students, piss artists and layabouts (I qualified in all 3 categories!) and it featured the Moog (a daft dog) in its warped cast!!

I feel like a young child when I see fireflies. My imagination turns to fairies and fairy tales. Wish I had that sort of feeling about other bugs. I am bugphobic!!

There were quite a few fireflies around here last year (not 'trillions', unfortunately), but I saw only one glowworm. When I spotted the light on the ground, I thought at first it was an injured firefly unable to fly with damage to its abdomen that caused its light to be stuck 'on'. :smile:
No fireflies so far this year.

We have fireflies in Lunigiana too - but have not seen them as early as this. Perhaps it takes them a while to get up the hill to 600 metres?? June is our time for nocturnal enjoyment.

Some amusing information that I learned over the weekend from a friend while we were watching our fireflies (they've arrived late this year, probably due to too much rain):
all the fireflies you see flashing are females - it's the females who flash at the males to attract a mate
in different species of fireflies, the females flash at different rates so they don't attract the wrong sort of male
there's a South American firefly where the female mimics the flash rates of other species, then eats up all the males of the wrong species which have been taken in by her flashing.
Isn't nature wonderful!

They finally started to appear here one evening last week, but I remember there being more of them last year. The best display we've had so far was on one of the warmer evenings after a dry day, so I'm assuming it's the cooler temperatures that have been putting them off.
