9617 Telecom Italia DSL modem question?

So I was feeling pretty disgusted with the slow speeds of my connection today when I noticed an offer from Telecom for a fixed line and 7meg DSL. I was weak and ordered. Odds are they'll say sorry your out of the service area but assuming I get lucky  the deal comes with a rental modem. Anybody know how quickly I can hand it back and buy my own?

As long as you can provide & configure a device of your own to stick in the socket, what business is it of TI's what that device is (they have no practical way of telling anyway)? Buy what you want as soon as the line is installed and working with the supplied modem. Oh, and they won't be interested in taking their modem back, it'll be written off agaonst your contract ... just sling it in a cupboard as a spare.

They charge either 3 or 4 Euros a month for the rental. That's more in one year then the thing is worth. I bet they'd keep billing the rental until I figure out how to give it back to hem

BTW they need a little sense. The website wanted two phone numbers so I could order my fixed line. How many people without a fixed line have two phone numbers? A phone company demanding a phone number before providing a phone number is shooting itself in the foot.

We called Alice up back in December to be upgraded to 7 Meg as they were bombarding us with emails about it.

5+ months later, still stuck on 2 Meg, despite many calls to them and promises and guarantees back in return....

What is really annoying is, we would probably get the full 7 Meg as we are a stones throw from the exchange.

But i guess, as we don't live in a big town/city we will be last to be upgraded...

Ah, then I suspect the answer to your question is the length of contract you signed :-( Normally they hide the h/w cost in the package price so they can market the modem as "free" - in this case they were at least up front about the rental cost but I'd wager that you're stuck with it for the min duration of the deal. Time for the small print ...

BTW, I liked the 2 phone no's bit ... quite Kafkaesque :-)

The only thing I could see in the contract is if I cancel the DSL service in less then 12 months the free install isn't free anymore. But nothing on the modem/router.

Ital have you asked about the 20meg service? Then when they've upgraded everything switch back down to the 7meg

No worries. I'm outside the ADSL coverage.

BTW they ask for two phone numbers then they email me with a phone number to call that doesn't work from a cell phone.

No we asked about the 7 Meg upgrade, as in our town they haven't upgraded it to ADLS2+ (20 Meg) yet.

Very poor service from them, but what can we do, the rest are just as bad....
