Thanks Charles.
We had the same thing yesterday. I checked the originating number on the telephone and it appeared to have originated from a Mozambique code (258). Source message number 25882171, recall number 899431049. Like you we did not go any further with it.

I think I got that weeks ago. Told me to use a fixed line to call. Not having a fixed line I thought that strange

I have also received several of the text messages saying that you should ring xxxxxxxxx to retrieve a voice message left for you. Sorry I can't give you the number because I delete them when they arrive - which is the best advice to give you all if you get one as well.

they are actually about to bring in a new law which will hopefully stop a lot of this stuff... maybe why traffic in it is at a high now...as they try to earn more before the numbers are blocked...
anyway as a start you will find that to dial one of these numbers from 30th june will mean that you have to phone up the telecom company you are with and get them to unblock the prefix number,,,, in fact you will most probably have to sign a form
anyway here's a link to the story in detail plus the more numbers

its quite a good site for other info on consumer issues
its been a feature story on the main news here since last week and i guess this thread came along at the right time ... they seem to be updating and simplifying numbers available and also capping costs...
one of the big cheats here is the directory enquiry services.... many of the companies keeping you hanging on the line for excessive periods and costs... hopefully that service will be capped as well

Similarly, a text mesage from 48248.......sent to mobiles, the last few digits do vary, but simply on opening the message, even to delete it, costs you at least E2-00. You can block them but you have to go to a network provider shop to do so. Hopefully these will be included in the new law mentioned by Adriatica - according to the girl in our local TIM shop they are also on the increase.
PS : I should have added that the TIM shop girl reckoned that for those unaware of the scam and the fact that on opening the message they are charged, most receive 6+ such messages before they realise, so the Euros soon add up!
Just a warning for any of you perhaps travelling and turning on your Italian mobiles DO NOT CALL 899 NUMBERS.
I have just received a similar warning to Charles's via sms from TIM - they warn that sms messages are being sent asking you to phone 899 from a fixed line and as there is a high risk of fraud - don't.

I just got one . So the banning isn't working very well
I've received similar messages. I'm a trusting person but always a suspicious cow when it comes to phone/internet messages and I just did a quick Google to confirm that it was a scam. I've also had an Egyptian number to call once, so the above advice is well worth heeding.
