9629 Eating out Pescara Montesilvana

I promised this guy a very well deserved mention on this forum, so here goes.
Pescara is a wonderful place for seafood but after a while one yearns for an alternative. Unfortunately the main alternative is always pizza. Well you can take just so much so we went of the beaten.
We wandered the streets of Montesilvana and saw a sign to Nonna’s Cucina. (Nanna’s Kitchen). Nonna turned out to be a big man called Francesco. Now here’s the crunch! We asked for a menu. He said ‘I don’t have one, what do you want?’ He said he could cook almost anything. We asked for antipasti then steak chips and vegetables and boy did we get it and in spades! There was salami, prosciutto, salsiccia, finocchiona, pancetta, cheese with olive oil, marinated mushrooms artichokes and aubergines, garlic bread, toast with olive oil and more. When the steaks came the were enormous but tender T-bones with a bowl of chips and a good selection of veg. All this with wine for three people 60 euros!!!
Just to prove it wasn’t a one off or a dream we went again three nights later and very similar except this time we opted for the fillet steak costing an extra 5 euros each.
Thank you Francesco for two really great meals.

I'm sorry to divert attention from your thread Anymouse but I'd just like to say something about Fujiyama at Montesilvano. We had been there a couple of times before because we love Japanese food, so even if the restaurant is not truly Japanese, for us it was better than nothing. We used to live in Japan so we do know a bit about the cuisine, even if we may not be experts. On this one evening when we were there, we ordered our usual trays of sushi and sashimi. When the food arrived, the tuna looked a bit off, instead of reddish pink, it was more like brown and didn't smell right. We called for the waiter who in turn called the Chinese lady at the reception who appears to be in charge that evening. Normally, there's a manager around but he seems to be off that night. She came to our table and when we explained that the tuna appeared to be off, she took an indignant tone with us and said: "That's the way it's eaten in Japan!" We were rather taken aback by her rudeness and her condescending attitude. My husband then said to her: "We lived in Japan and there's no way anyone will eat rotten fish there, or anywhere else." We got up and left, and never went back there again.

It could be that it was just that one evening when we were unfortunate enough to encounter a bad day for the restaurant. But I think it's quite scary that they try to sell food that was not fresh, especially if it was meant to be eaten raw. But what's most unforgiving was the attitude of the lady who didn't see anything wrong in serving customers rotten food. In any case, that was about 3 years ago, so things may have changed for the better.

We make the hour drive south for a change of taste and have been to fujiyama several times in the past two years and have always had excellent food and service. Perhaps there have been some changes since you were there last.

I agree, was also in japan, unfortunately the only good japanese restaurants that i know of are in Milano and Roma (pricey though). However, there is one of the best fish restaurants on the Adriatic coast below Rimini is Guerrino in Pescara on the sea front just in front of the hotel esplanade.italian not japanese but excellent fish only fresh, and highly qualified service ie.not plate carriers but great attentive waiters who know their business

I fully agree with comments about Nonna's Kitchen. You can pick up the signs for it in the main high street and either walk or drive. Francesco doesn't speak English so take your phrase book but he does wonderful antipasta, great tagliatelle and fabulous fillet steak with unlimited wine and water. Total was 105Euro for 4 of us. Definitely worth the trip to Pescara to eat there.
