Welcome - and buying in Calabria is (IMO) a good idea: but look carefully, and not only at new-build offers. (Okay, it's easy to buy these, the agents speaka di Engrish) but explore a little bit and perhaps you will find some small developments, perhaps new build, but which are being sold by the geometra of the Italian developer - to Italians. Beware of stuff which is aimed at 'foreigners' - this tends to be the cheap end of the condominum market, not even nice as a holiday home, and completely hopeless as an investment!
Eyes wide open and you should be okay - but don't make any decisions based on cheap flights from the UK, and consider the challenge of driving from Dover down to Scalea area before you commit to anything.

Such good advice from Charles. Many Calabrians we know, say that even houses built to the highest standards in Calabria cannot be confidently considered an investment. There is so much land that can be built on and Calabrians themselves prefer to buy apartments or build the house "of their dreams" the way they want it. As for eventually selling to a foreigner, then stupendous seaview not olive groves is what attracts. That's what I am told but perhaps those of you who are not Calabrian and are living there permanently or with holiday properties there may know better.
Of course you're welcome. We take all sorts here - Calabrians, Pugliese, Friends, Romans, countrymen.....
Benvenuto tutti e due. Enjoy.
