Hi Lynne,
That does not mean that you have to give up on the idea of a civil wedding ceremony outdoors.
Many comunes do hold such ceremonies and they are legal.
For example Malcesine Castle see Urlaub Malcesine am Gardasee
for some planners offering this service.
Also a wonderful old villa in Gradara Le Marche also have a special deal with one planner to do weddings outdoors in the cloisters of the villa.
Just google gradara weddings.
Good luck and hope you get what you are looking for for your daughter's big day.

Dear Lynne,
it is not possible in Italy to have a civil wedding outside, but they could do at the town hall just the legal part and then have a symbolic ceremony in the garden. I'm a wedding planner and a celebrant, so if you need any other suggestion please contact me via PM.
The symbolic ceremony can be much better than the one at the town hall, because you can really personalize it and make it special.
Waiting for your answer.
Bye
Micky

Sigh!!!
Isn’t this the sort of self advertising that is being frowned upon?

There are properties, very few, around Tuscany that allow legal and binding civil ceremonies in the gardens of the same venue where you are staying as well as hosting the reception. A true all-in-one special venue. Because there are only a few they book up quite early even during these tougher economic times. PM me if you need any assistance or email me through my website.

PS
The rules state clearly that this "advertising", which I consider helpful, is not frowned upon in the rules of forum usage.

If you choose to marry in Italy, in a Castle or beautiful setting, then get it in writing that the venue has a licence to allow people to marry there. Unfortunately some places hold weddings and amazingly have no official licence to do so. Yes incredible but true.

Noble that is quite true. In fact, I know of only 2 venues that have such a license - one of them is outside of Florence about 20kms and the other is in the province of Lucca and they just got the license last year which is great news. Other ones tell you that you can marry there, but they really are only referring to symbolic ceremonies or blessings which can break hearts. It is for special reasons like this that a wedding planner can be invaluable ;-)

Hi Lynne,
Italian law states that a civil wedding may only be celebrated in a structure belonging to the local comune and open to the public.
Private houses and gardens are out I'm afraid.
