9735 Car hire in Rome

We are spending a few days in Rome and then plan to hire a car & drive out to Perugia. Can anyone suggest a sensible location to pick up a hire car which is a reasonable distance from the centre of Rome by taxi, but which is far enough out that we will be able to get onto the roads out of Rome fairly easily?

Thanks

Fiumicino Airport is quick & easy from Termini (the main train station). Trains run every 30 minutes & the journy is about 30 minutes too. The airport is on the autostrada & the hire desks are open 7 days a week. You will probably find a manned desk when you return so there is no worring about an unattended drop-off. Avoid the GRA (ring road) morning & evening rush hour and you will be fine. The train fare is about €10

However, the shortest train journey to Perugia is about 2¼ hours, might be worth considering? It will probably take you longer to drive, see (from: Fiumicino RM, Italy to: perugia - Google Maps) A car is a pain in Perugia and the train ride through Lazio into Umbria is very pleasant. Buy pannini & caffè at the station & take breakfast on the way. You can reserve & choose your seats at (almost) any Rome travel agent. Italian trains are inexpensive & comfortable when pre-booked.

That is what I would do.

Have fun
