As an aside, I find it VERY strange that I can open a bank account(done that), I can buy a house(done that), I have a codice fiscale(done that) BUT I am not allowed to buy a car ! as I have not yet gained residency.............Any views?[/quote]

Why would you want to buy a car in Italy? Just bring one out from the UK. Driving in the right with a right hand drive car is so easy especially on narrow roads because you don't have to guess how far away from the edge you are you just look out of your side window!
I was quite worried before I came over here about bringing my RHD but now I'm here I'm so glad I didn't swap it for a left hooker.
I know there are minor details like MOT's but as I intend popping back to UK now and again I'll just factor in one return journey by car per year to get the MOT. It works for me.

I'm with Paul on this one. Our trusty Volvo comes out for the summer each year and provided your insurance covers you for more than 60 days (check!) eg with Saga and all else is in order then no problems. As for driving position you just have to take care partic when joining traffic stream from the right. Journey to UK is a bit long but make it a bit of a tour and take 4 days .
Thanks to all

I (foolishly?) drove our Jag over and REALLY enjoyed it and still do.............however, ................it really is not ideal for some of the roads that we are currently using, driving back to the UK every year seems such a bind...(do you want to buy?!).........maybe I'll take the three day trip and chill!:dull:

I'm able to do the trip to my Mum's in the UK in a day, and alone, although I don't always do so! I bought an Italian reg car as I couldn't face the faff and the cost of re-registering my 10 year old ruster which would have been more than the value.
Driving back for visits means I can load up on parmigiano and the like, but more importantly it means I have transport in the UK, and don't have to hire or, even worse, pay long distance train fares!

I bought a old car in Puglia with the help of a good Italian friend of mine. No problems at all. But if I am stopped by the police, I must give my Italian address.
Insurance is VERY expensive, but luckily the insurance company suspend my premium if I return all the papers to them when leaving Italy.
