I've been buying a worldwide 5 euro card in the village - costs the same for mobiles as land-line and at leat 30 mins of calls for 5 euros! Much better than a mobile.

Are you using a fixed line or a cell?
On a fixed there are two plans that might make more sense then a calling card.

Operation international. 1 Euro a month plus 7 cents a minute.

Teleconomy international. A flat 10 Euros a month for unlimited minutes
But if you're calling a fixed line even the base rate might be not much different then a calling card.

That Teleconomy Internazionale seems just like the answer I have been looking for.
Unlimited calls for only €10.00. I have the same service here in Germany with Deutsche Telecom but it is only €3.40. An extra €6.60 doesn't seem like to much to pay if it saves me a couple of hundred euros every month in calls.
I just hope there is no catch in it.
Mind you, I did pay Telecom Italia in February for a new line and as yet it's not been installed.
Had an appointment last week but they never turned up.

We use IMinuti google it. They give you a local number (based in Milan) which you dial first and thereafter it's 3cents per minute to the UK. We don't have a landline and only use mobiles. We used to use Wind to connect to the Milan number at just 12 cents per minute so a total of 15 cents per minute to the UK. We now use Vodafone Casa which allows us "free" calls to the Milan server and thereafter just 3 cents per minute to the UK. We've also tried using Betamax's justvoip service which works in a similar way but the call quality wasn't good whereas IMinuti has proven very reliable. One potential advantage of Vodafone Casa is they give you a virtual landline number so people from the UK can call you using a variety of services for practically nothing.
We have recently been using a "ticket" called Sisal Airtime, purchased from local tabaccheria, (Monteponne) which is in 5e units use it for Europe and Canada, from landline or mobile, excellent connection and always has been clear sound, much better than the other cards we have used.
