Well you just did. You asked the question, and here comes the answer! Welcome to the forum.

Hi
And welcome

A lot of what you need can be found using the search button, have a look and then see what you need ..............good luck

The search facility on this site is pretty poor, even when you know exactly what you are looking for.

You might be able to find things using the tag system although this is still in its infancy.

Look at the end of the posts and you will see a 'tags' button, if you click on this it will bring up a range of subjects, if one of those subjects is something you are interested in just click it and it will bring up all the threads which have been tagged as having relevance to that subject.

Good luck

given that the areas you're thinking about cover about half the country why don't you spend some time moving around these regions, looking and getting the whole picture, you may decide then that it has to be x, or even none of them...or maybe not italy at all....it could save a lot of heartache later on.the last thing on the agenda should be a house until you've definitely decided where you want to be you might end up preferring Piemonte o Sicilia..
libraries/sky and marmite etc are only once you've established and are only details.

Some v sound advice here. Living in Italy is not the same as having a holiday in Italy so I would ask " how much time have you spent here previously?, been here in winter?, Have you thought of renting , maybe for a year, there's plenty of property out there for rent which will give you the true Italian experience before finally burning all your boats UK- wise. All this sort of thing has been on the forums before so do try the search facility tho' I have not tried it myself. I do hope everything works out for you, buona fortuna!

Thanks for help. Plan is to sell up over here and then rent for a while (prob not a year though) whilst looking in central Italy and then buy. Will rent in winter so see country at its worst! Have been to North Italy, not impressed apart from Venice and feel South is too hot/dry.

Northern Lazio getting more popular as favourites like Tuscany and Umbria becoming more expensive and S Lazio, my favourite, v largely undiscovered by expats of any nationality. Proximity to Rome could be seen as an advantage or disadvantage - you choose. The Ciociaria area being written about in mags now - see Italy mag past issue (part of S Lazio and pronounced shoshareeya by the locals)

I bought my house on the edge of S. Lazio/Molise/Abruzzo national park. As said above, S Lazio has hardly been invaded by other nationalities (although there are a few Irish/Italians and Scottish/Italians around). And so beautiful, in the mountains and easy driving to the Med. And not as hot as further south, yet less than an hour and a half to Rome, similar to Naples and Pompeii. We are 15 mins from Cassino (as in Monte Cassino). House prices are excellent value, but they are rising steadily because the north has become so expensive.
I am moving over there permanently as soon as I can later this year. Cannot wait.
Best of luck with your search.
Maralyn

Thanks for this. Will sell my flat here later this year (hopefully the property market will improve!) and then rent somewhere in Italy to have a good look around. Fancy somewhere near the coast - what's the Med coast like near you?
Hazy

Hi Hazy
I have only been to Gaeta and Formia which are lovely, not touristy but the Italians go there for holiday and some beautiful houses along the beach area. Fortunately I have yet to meet any Brits there to date but again, I have only visited a few times. They are old, Italian coastal restorts and the mountains go straight into the sea there if you know what I mean.

Hi there

Good luck with your venture. I would personally advise that you rent first so you are not rushed into buying a place, many places are easy to rent, but you will have to sign a contract for 4 years. It is standard, unless you take a long term rent on a holiday property, but this could be more expensive.

Forums like this are good to find infomation, but if you are still struggling for answers, then i would get incontact with the Italian Consulate. There are many based in the uk, and they offer their advise free. Just do a google search to find the nearest to you. I also have a contact for both the Italian consulate and property lawyers, they could advise. They are good friends of mine based in the uk. If you want the details feel free to email on miccapup@tiscali.co.uk

Regards
Gill

Gill,
thanks for this - will e-mail as suggested - will this get to you or the friends you mention?
Hazy

email will come to me, and i will send you the details.

Hello Hazy
I am also wanting to move within the next year. Why do you want to live in Italy? Do you have family or friends there already? What would be your concerns with such a move?
Living in England at present I certainly want sun, sun and more sun!!
I also have a lot of questions to ask same as you!
Good luck

regarding lazio and property a useful thread on here might make you thini twice on the cassino area... various northern lazio areas

http://www.italymag.co.uk/forums/italian-politics/9907-nuclear-power-stations.html

the aquila area of abruzzo

http://www.italymag.co.uk/forums/abruzzo/6464-toxic-secret-italy-s-unspoilt-region.html

various areas of campania

as regards uk based lawyers i would also treat many of them with caution ...those that specialise in italian property sales as they seem now to have moved form soliciting to soliciting trade in selling their own properties... learning i guess from the estate agents that they once went against in combining all trades...

as for searching at the bottom of threads nowadays is the tags section... which is getting more and more helpful but the search facility if you put in very definite terms can come up with relevant results...

best of luck with it all

i would say also knowing the gaeta area very well indeed that describing it as free of tourists would be a major misconception asd it is overrun during the summer months and is also the base for a lot of american nato army types as well...although agree it is very beautiful

Have any of you guys tried Abruzzo. It is perhaps Italy's most beautiful areas, mountains (including Italy's highest inland mountain), ski slopes and fantastic beaches + food and wine are incredibile - it is rapidly becoming the italians' holiday resort - try it, I love it here and the people are so laid back compared to Tuscany or Umbria.

There are still some good properties in Tuscany which represent good value for money. Have a look at the Val di Lima, Garfagnana, Lunigiana areas. Beautiful towns full of history, close to fabulous cities... We bought in Bagni di Lucca after several trips to the area and we are delighted. You will get plenty of information about prices searching in the Property Section of the Italy Magazine (actually, we bought through one of these agents). If you want to have a look at our area, there is a useful site: Val di Lima - The guide to Bagni di Lucca and around - Start here!
One last piece of advice, don´t rush. You will eventually find exactly what you need, but be patient. Keep on asking questions, I´m sure that many will try to help.
