When i return a hire car i always take a photo of the dashboard, with kms, time/date and petrol tank so if they try and diddle me I have the proof - so far its worked.
Good advice.
But fuller advice ought to start with when you pick up the car in the first place: checking for existing damage (and making very sure it's recorded), and checking that there really is a full tank of fuel.
