9949 The best summer sagras...?

This summer I'm really looking forward to a couple of sagras... that of my own paese, and that of Navelli, near L'Aquila, on 23-24 August for several reasons.

[*]It's a sagra of chickpeas and saffron - so we get to feed our stomachs as well as our eyes!
[*]They have a donkey palio (race), which has got to be worth a smile :laughs:
[*]They have an artisan's market and art exhibition which should be nice to get some bits for the house and for folk back home

Which of the summer sagras will you be making sure not to miss? What makes a sagra an unforgettable experience?

Do & See

In our area we can visit a sagra every weekend into September. The range of foods cover everything from mountain fare to seafood in the Piceno area so we have many favorites.

Petritoli (Marche) has a couple of cool ones- the Festa della Cove which is on next weekend. On Sunday they have a parade of floats through the town and there are lots of full size corn dollies & stuff around (can be a bit scary at night). Then in August they have go kart racing through the town- lots of crashes- thinking of seeing if Top Gear want to come (despite lack on engines!). Here in Montalto on 13th & 14th August we have the "Notte delle Streghe e dei Folletti" (or something similar)- the Night of Witches & Goblins which has lots of tablaues in the old town. It's gone a bit Disney but the burning of a witch effigy (complete with noxious gases) is always worth a look!

Here;s a short video about the saffron cultivation in Navelli so now see the significance of the saffron being used in the chick pea recipe mentioned by you, Sue.
