We are off to the San Remo area in Imperia this week and I would like to know if anyone has any recommendations for good beaches in the area. It seems that the cost of sunbeds and umbrellas has become quite prohibitive so any guidance to the free beaches in the area would be very welcome. I don't mind driving further up the coast as long as it's a nice beach.

There are patches of free beach around Sanremo. Very busy at the weekends, particularly Sunday. Very inexpensive to pick up your beach mat or even little chairs! What kind of beach do you prefer, sandy or pebble?
There is a sandy bay at Bussana, just before Arma di Taggia which has free sections. Arma has free sections of sandy beach - very busy though. You can keep going - all the small costal towns further on have sections too - quite nice some of them.
The stretch of beach from Ventimiglia - Camporosso - Vallecrosia - Bordighera has free sections with showers on the beach. Parking is now pay parking at Vallecrosia. These are pebble. The Vallecrosia/Camporosso section has had two years of re-working and is much larger and gently shelving than previously. Its also perhaps more local.
