A 1.6 Focus diesel is 90 cv & the petrol version is 114 cv. This should calculate as €184,50 or € 233,70 per annum. You also need the select the Direttiva CEE which for the Focus is Euro 4.

Car Tax

We pay E269.61 + Service of the broker Euro 1.55 on my 2 Litre auto Golf Hatchback
On Our Smart Roadster Coupe euro 154.80 + 1.55
We were informed that it is not road tax anymore but Tassa di Possesso " meaning that you are the owner. There is talk that this will be phased out. However, always bear in mind that in Italy 10 people can give you 10 different versions.
This is paid to ACI ( Automobile Club D'Italia.) You will be issued with a receipt. You do not need to display this but you must display your insurance.
Incidentally, both cars are Italian, and are for sale as we are returning to the UK. Golf 21,000 Kilometres registered April 2006, ( one owner ,me,bought from new)
Smart 16,000 Kilometres registered Feb 2004. ( one previous owner before us) .

I had a 911 and a VW Golf TDI 2l thingy in England. Insuring them both cost me around £800. I replaced my UK 911 with an Italian 911 and my insurance for the one car is now E3250!!! and that was the cheapest fully comp! And the flippin tax (or ownership tax or whatever its called) is a wapping great E1000!:wideeyed:
Mumma Mia. Thinking of swapping it for a bike.
When I was searching around for quotes I phoned a company in America and one in the UK. They both said that the amount of accident claims coming from Italy is far greater than anywhere else they insure in the WHOLE WORLD. No surprises there then
The above doesn't answer your questions, I'm affraid. It's just painting a picture of how different it is to the UK.

Thanks Noddy.Sounds like it would be cheaper to bring over my UK car and pay the extra insurance on my UK cover while I am in Italy.Do you see any problem doing that ?
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
I think you get a max of 6 months allowance out of the UK. Check with your insurers. I know a few people who pop backwards and forwards for visits to the UK so they can keep their UK insurance. Also, if you need an MOT or a service to the UK car the italians just won't touch it if its not bought and registered in Italy. We have a car bought in the UK, for Italy, and the manufacturer did all the registration stuff - right from new, but no one will touch it for MOT or servicing except the manufacturers agent. Its a real pain. If you are just here for the winter months, I did 6 months hire with Auto Europa out of Pisa airport. They do (did) a great deal. E2000 for 6 months on a Fiat Panda (The Panda - eats shoots and leaves - was Noddy. The 997 is Bob :nah:). Miles and CDW included. It's cheaper than buying a car, taxing and insuring it. But then come April the price rocketed for the summer months. So there are some options. But if you're here full time you just have to bite the bullet. Its extortionate. There was a post on here a few months back about the different insurance companies people have used. So if you buy, do a search on old posts. It was very useful.

I have12-month cover (with Axa), for use in Italy, through a broker in Wales called Stuart Collins -- don't have their number to hand, but I think you'll get it quite easily by Googling. The car is a UK-registered LHD, parked/driven in Italy throughout the year.
The only problem is that I have to bring it back here once a year for MOT etc.
Insurance costs us about £500 p.a.

Noddy am I reading this correctly? You are paying 3250€ for comp insurance. That's mind boggling. Car Insurance in Spain is more than in the UK but I insure through Gibraltar which is OK. But Spanish levels are way way short of what you are paying. I'll have to do some research here. I guess there must be a thread. This makes owning a car in Italy a monstrously expensive undertaking. Maybe that explains why car rental in Italy is expensive.
Cheers,
Santiago

Yep! Original quotes were coming up at 4.5k plus a super car suppliment. I tried all the specialists (America/UK etc) and they said that the most claims they have in Europe are from Italy, hence the huge amounts of dosh. The insurance I have is purpose built. For example, I'm not going to take it off roading up a mountain, and I'm done with throwing my vehicles around on the track. Apparently the normal fully comp includes all that stuff over here.
I got a stone thru. the window on the superstrada outside La Spezia a couple of weeks ago. Euro 750! So already the insurance had come in to its own.

We have from new, an Italian reg Subaru 4x4 (now 4 years old). We are retirement age and it costs about 2,000 euros to insure it using a "recommended" insurance agent. In Italy no matter your track record you start from scratch (with a tiny discount if you jump up and down a bit). No one with any sense buys car insurance online. There are threads on this Forum about car insurance and some people who go to and from UK use Italsure. I have also a small, Italian reg car with third party fire and theft and low mileage. The insurance bill came recently for 600 euros. I jumped up and down a lot and got a 200 euro reduction!! The cost of road tax varies according to car size but is no where near as expensive as car insurance. Each year you simply renew it at a bar that sells Lotto tickets.
We worked out that it costs over a thousand pounds to make a return journey to the UK with an English registered car plus overnight accommodation, in order to get an MOT and then of course had to pay English road tax even though we were here not there. The AA at Newcastle does an annual AXA policy to cover your car being driven all year in Italy. We did this initially with our LHD British bought Subaru.

the car tax here (bollo) is not all that different to that in the UK, in my experience. One thing I would point out to everyone is that bollo is payable on the ownership of the vehicle - the number plate, in other words. It doesn't matter if you are using the car or not - or even if it is on a public road. It is payable until the vehicle is either scrapped (with the correct documentary proof) or exported (with the correct documentary proof - and the return of the numberplates) or sold - again with documentary proof. As the only criteria in the UK is whether or not the vehicle is on a public road or not, it is possible that somone might think that keeping their old vehicle off the road is enough not to incur the bollo charges.
Insurance? We have two cars here and .... really! Has anyone actually made a successful insurance claim via a UK insurer without having a UK address? We are paying over €2500 a year for 3PF&T insurance - with one of the cars being a Smart car! Please tell me everything!

Noble, that's so true! All the time people are telling me I should have insured it in the uk and driven it backwards and forwards to meet the insurance rules and and in the future for MOT's and servicing. It costs around 80 quid for a return flight to the UK from Pisa. And a grand a trip by car, plus the wear, plus the tires, and the havoc it plays with the mileage! It's another one of those if you live here you just have to get on with it scenarios. And, yes, dig around for the best deal you can get.
It's such a gas guzzler, it's made me really fit. For short journeys the car stays at home and I cycle up and down our mountain on my bike. So I am saving money
Nardini, you're right! Trying to beat the system is a false economy, in my view. I'm sure they wouldn't pay out to a non UK address :nah:
