The Tories have a history of preferring VAT to income tax, more difficult to avoid but hits poor people most, remember Howe doubling VAT to 15% then Lamont increasing it to 17.5% to make up for the Poll tax fiasco, so the latest increase to 20% is par for the course. No VAT on food though, so I suppose we have something to be grateful for. As for buying baked beans from ASDA why bother? The tinned French Haricots have less salt and sugar and taste ten times better! As it happens I'm more worried what the Tories have in store for my final salary pension!!!
