Ouch! That's about about £52 at the current dire exchange rate. It's disapppointing that, just occasionally, one does feel ripped off. By comparison, we had a nine course lunch on Christmas Day (water, wine, liqueurs & coffee included) - 30 euro each!

I suppose high prices at these places are more understandable if you take into consideration that they have a very limited season.

The worst has to be spending €4 or €6 on a frozen, tasteless roll with dubious packaging!

I'm not a fan of beach holidays, but notice that things haven't really changed since my last one some 30 years ago (mountains and lakes ever since).
The beaches were always full of the 'rip-off' merchants right from the 'bagnino' with is deck chairs and umbrellas to the wandering 'Vu comprar?' (beach sellers with their watches, music etc), and of course the beah bars.
But this morning on the news they announced that 'beach tariffs' are to be cut by 50% in August to try and save the season. It seems many just can't afford a holiday at all this year and foreign bookings are really low!
So - every cloud has a silver lining, no matter HOW small it is!

I know Guilianova and yes I find eating there, especially in summer is more expensive than here around Lago Trasimeno Umbria. The fish is often frozen rather than fresh but that's kept secret!!! My cousin who lives there says prices are pushed up in the season. The locals tend to eat at home or eat pizza. Along the beach from Martinsicuro there is that horrible orange netting all over the beach...why isn't it pulled down? Apparently no one dares to. They outline propsed sites for "illegal" beach bars yet to come....

I know three Italian families that took their beach holidays outside Italy this year (two in Spain, one in Greece) for this very reason. The families that went to Spain raved about what fantastic value for money their holidays were (they both went to the smaller balearic islands) and how clean the hotels were in comparison to hotels at home.
A few weeks back we drove through the Adriatic resort of Giulianova with house-guests, one of whom insisted that we have lunch there. Giulianova is nice enough as Italian sea-side resorts go, but it's nothing fantastically atmospheric and it's certainly not likely to ever be the place to be seen if you want to be seen in the trendiest places.
We got our lunch in a little place on the seaside. Well, you could almost see the sea on the other side of the road, beyond the promenade and a couple hundred metres of beach packed solidly with sunloungers.
This being Italy where eating out normally means you don't pay a lot for generous portions of good quality food, we didn't bother to request a menu or ask about prices.
Two of us ordered calamari, the other two ordered pasta alla carbonara. We also ordered four insalata mista, two glasses of wine and two mineral waters. When it eventually came, the food was okay, but the portions of pasta, squid and salad turned out to be only starter-sized.
The bill was €66.
That's almost UK prices! :eeeek:
