That'll teach him not to fight! I'm surprised he actually got the hours exercise.

Terrifying experience; however, if he learned his lesson.... he will be wiser in the future. I don't think we will see him again in Italy, though.....

How do you know he was fighting? Who is to say he was not picked up with a bunch that were fighting. Unless you know all the facts, I would not jump to criticise.

An interesting site can be found here, maybe it will open the eyes of a lot of people when one do some searching.

If you carefully read the article, it says:

"Earlier on that Friday morning, Matthew had been brought before the magistrate in the Naples jail after being arrested following a brawl in the early hours of Thursday morning."
I don't think that he would have been arrested for being an onlooker.

Actually Mark, thanks for your post because you are right - even though I was being flippant when I said "that will teach him not to fight" because he was sent to a tough jail in a tough area with tough inmates and I'm fairly confident he will have had a tough time there, hence he may have seen what fighting was really about while there - but I accept it came across as hypercritical to post that as I was not there and don't know what happened. Apologies.

Actually the reason I said it was because it happened to me once. Half a dozen people causing trouble and the police turned up and arrested half the resturant. Most did not end up in jail, but then the police spoke English.
