I have joined, I think it is a good idea.

Joined as well.......... great idea.
Can we link to some of the threads about pet care, or do we have to repost everything?

I've signed up too and would be very interested in hearing from people who've transported their cats from U.S or Canada to Italy via air.

I think placing links to existing threads is a good idea. It is a pity the message system can be a problem to trawl through if you are looking for specific info. but if people ask a question it should not be too difficult either to answer it or point them to the relevant thread.

Gerry, have a look at the Pet's corner group, I am posting a couple of things for you.

Gala, thanks so much for the links. Its good to know Air France (at least) are pet friendly.

We haven't yet sent our cats to Italy but did send them over to Florida USA & brought them back again to the UK during 2005 using British Airways.
We had no problems with the airline, they were extremely good, just problems with their pet passports & the american vet who had to check them before they left the US.
Fortunately all was sorted out without them needing to be quarantined, mainly
because they had always been looked after by the same vet in the UK who could provide DEFRA with all the missing documentation.
It was very stressful for us & when we move them over to Italy (hopefully next year) it will definiltely be permanent!
I would just suggest checking & re-checking all the documentation that is required & don't take it for granted that all the relevant authorities that require paperwork have neccessarily received it!.
The cats did not suffer at all from their travelling & settled in to their new (temporary) home very quickly
good luck
Valerie

Thanks for the advice Valerie and more importantly confirmation that your cats survived such a long trip! Actually its not all the paperwork that concerns me, its the prospect of my cats dying a traumatic death enroute that bothers me

I do appreciate that you are thinking about moving your cat a very long distance by air, but have you not considered that if you moved the cat, in company with yourselves (no doubt long term faithful 'slaves' of your cat!), on a transatlantic liner it would not only be a pleasurable experience for yourselves, but also the cat?

Think about it - the cat would be absolutely the star of the voyage, and (in my admittedly limited) experience would revel in this status - and as the cat's owners the kudos reflected on 'those crazies' who have brought their cat on the QE2 (or whatever is plying the route today) surely has to be better than starring on 'Isola dei famosi'. Plus, no jetlag!

Use the cat as an excuse to travel in a civilised manner!

Don't think this hasn't crossed my mind Charles  When the time comes, I'll be checking all options including a boat!!
