10210 Arrival of 1st baby ,Only in Italy & a serious question

Sorry, but have to tell everyone who is willing to listen. The reason we moved to Italy was to start a family, after just over 2 years living here our first child was born 5 days ago. WOW now the fun really starts.

Only in Italy :veryconfused: she was born 9th august, all the paperwork signed by hand by doctors etc. says 9th august, but the hospital computer system and hence the codice fiscale and probably from this day forward every other document computer generated says 1 day previous i.e. 8th august. Obviously all officialdom now says that it has no idea how to correct it, not my desk & no idea who can correct it. My poor daughter, first days of life and already Italian bureaucracy has made life difficult, maybe on the bright side she can be like the queen, actual & official birthdays.
The only way of dealing with Italian bureaucracy is try to find the bright side.

Serious question now. My wife is Italian with both Italian and British passports and citizenships. i am British with british passport and Italian residency. My daughter will be registered here in Italy and therefore be Italian, we presume she will be added to my wife's passport for travel, what If i wish to take daughter alone sometimes back to UK ? how do i register her on my passport ? we would like her to have English passport also, How ?
Are there any other things we should think about to cover all possible future living situations and make life easy for her and us.
anyone any experience of these things please help.
Thanks

General chat about Italy

Hi Steve and congratulations! Do not worry about the mistake in your daughter's official records. These things happen!
As for nationality, I think that your daughter could get dual citizenship, just like your wife. Check with the nearest UK Consulate. Probably you will need to provide them with an Italian Certificate of Birth and they will do the necessary to register her.... with the wrong date of birth.... but it is not important, it will make her only one day older. Once the birth is recorded in the UK Registry, she should be able to get her own British passport or be added to your own passport until she is a bit older.
Very best wishes,

Well done (I'm not going to enquire why you had to move to Italy to conceive...could be 'too much information'!)
But from the passport point of view, I don't think it is any longer possible to add an offspring to a UK passport. I am not at all sure of how old young sprog has to be to need an individual passport, but I'd have a word with the UK consulate or embassy here in Italy. Dunno either about whether Italian born children get their own Carta d'identita at birth (that would work as an European (or maybe just Schengen)) passport so long as she didn't need to pass through Switzerland.

(Just hoping to confuse you further!)

Congratulations to all 3 of you !!!

It is correct that your daughter will need her own British Passport. Our daughter travelled to Portugal at 9 weeks old and was only 2 weeks old for the passport photo. It was just a picture of her in my arms asleep.

Congrats by the way.

I agree with the others, most EU members give children their own passport even if they are very young. I think that it is impossible to add something handwritten to a passport nowadays since they have special security devices which possibly prevent authorities from doing that kind of thing. The only thing is that possibly the validity of the passport will be short as the photo will have to be changed.... Don't ask for a passport unless you need to use one.

Congratulations to you all.

As has been said your daughter will definitely need her own passport - UK law has required this for a number of years, no doubt it is the same under Italian law as it is all to do with prevention of child trafficking/abduction. So first, you would need to get her birth registered in the UK.

Here is the relevant page from the British embassy in Rome telling you what info etc they will need and with links to the necessary forms -

Childrens passports are only valid for five years.

congrats to all three of you. but in the name of all thats good and holy how can they match a babe in arms to a five year old? :veryconfused:

Hi

Many congrats, I was not brave enough to have my baby here but brought him home when he was 3 weeks old.

UK babies do need there own passport, there is no correlation between photo and child, but we did put both our surnames on his passport so if questioned at least it can be seen that we are related!

The british consulate in Rome I believe from others are turning baby passports around in about 15 days!!

Book holidays now and enjoy bringing your baby up in the best possible country for it!

Congratulations!
we too are new parents, our son was born in April. To take him back to the UK alone as hubby was working I had to get a "certificato di nascita con fotografia". You have to get 3 passport photos (or 2 can't remember) but not with the silly rules you have in the UK - we just got a photo we already had resized. Take it to the anagrafe office of your comune. They pop the photo on a card and fill in the details and then you take it to the questura who have to stamp it etc. You will both need ID documents and photocopies. They write on the back of the baby's certificate who is allowed to take her out of the country, so you can have both you and your wife's name. It was surprisingly easy and hassle free!
good luck with the sleepless nights - it gets better!

Congratulations on your new addition!! You will definitely have to apply for a passport for your baby as you are no longer allowed to add a child to a parent passport and a child passport is only valid for 5 years at a time. Once the baby's birth certificate comes back you will need to make an appointment at your nearest UK consulate to register the birth abroad and you can apply for a British passport at the same time. It's actually pretty easy and isn't horribly expensive. I actually had to go through this process as I had my daughter in the UK so had to register her birth with the US consulate so she could have dual nationality as I am American and Daddy is British. We now live in Italy with number two on the way so will have to go through the process twice to register British and American. Hope this helps!

Hi there

I had my baby boy here in Italy. Unlike you they managed to get the paperwork right....even to the point they sent the polizia municipale to the door as i missed a check up at the hospital.

But my son has a british passport that had to be applied through the embassy at Rome. They are the only ones to issue the said passports. They were useful but took nearly 2 months to sort it all out. Getting the right birth certificate sent etc....and other things they needed that weren't mentioned on the website.

Best thing to do is look at the website. The form you fill in is the same as the uk form, just goes to the embassy.

Hope this helps, if not pm and i could help
