Talk to a school that does the GCSE, to see if they let others take the exam.

We did evening courses, then took the GCSE exams with the children - my kids were 'well embarrassed'.

I work at a University, which also offers Further Education courses, in Berkshire. The problem you are experiencing is that the Govt are focusing the funding at people who need to obtain a level 2 qualification and they are generally work based qualifications.

We now only offer 3 GCSE's part time - English, Maths and Biology. The fees are going up and people are finding them too expensive.

We offer Language Qualifications where you get an OCR (Oxford Cambridge and RSA qualification), but I know that the funding issue was the reason why we no longer offer GCSE's (except for the 3 mentioned) and A Levels part time.

as alan says, your best bet is to find a local school which teaches Italian to GCSE and ask their head of languages if you can be entered for the exam through the school (next July). Have you tried Bedfordshire?

Elise is right though - we go to evening school but the cost has gone up massively in the last three years. We now pay £200 each per year and we're still pre-GCSE!

It's a lot of money, specially for people who are retired, and our numbers have dropped drastically as a result. The college say they won't run the course unless there are nine people at least so it may be abandoned this year altogether which is really sad. :no:

The alternative a group of us have considered is asking a local Italian person to give us conversation lessons, and pay per week. That doesn't get the qualification of course, if that's important to you, but it does mean we can speak Italian and not break the bank.

If you are over 50 it maybe an idea to investigate ypu local University of the Third Age. I believe they can offer courses or groups where exams are not expected. Our local one offers Italian at various levels.

CathnMike - why don't you find a local Italian person, as you suggest, but then get hold of a GCSE syllabus to follow. You should then be able to find a local school that would be willing to let you sit the exam. Some schools, I believe, act as exam centres and will let you sit an exam even if it's for a subject they don't normally teach. I think there's nothing quite like the thought of sitting a formal exam to spur you on to do some serious work!

Incidentally, one of my daughters has just sat the GCSE Italian exam - results out on Thurday, I believe!

I took mine at one of the local schools, which is a specialist language college, and they offered the GCSE course free of charge, but we had to pay the exam entry fee.

There are two ways to find a local school which offers GCSE Italian - one being to contact your local education authority who should be able to provide a list of schools who offer both the GCSE and the facility for private candidate entries, the other to search on the [url=http://www.direct.gov.uk]Website of the UK government : Directgov[/url] website.
