It is worth pointing out that there is a single number that is used throughout the EU for calling emergency services - including the UK. The only number you need remember now is 112. It became the standard number for emergency services back in 1992, although the majority of people in Europe seem not to know it still.
[URL="http://ec.europa.eu/environment/civil/prote/112/112_en.htm"]Anyway, remember that wherever you may be in Europe, the emergency telephone number, for all services, is:

Hi
I had a real problem remembering all these. You'll need a little imagination but,,,
Yes, 112 .... Two guys holding guns..
113 .. Three services . police, fire and ambulance
115 ... Five for Fire
118 ... 8 looking like a person shape....
Any ideas for 116, the car rescue one?

If you programme the numbers into your phone you won’t have to remember them.
If you are travelling by car in Italy, try and note the road number you are on (if it is numbered road of course) because the worst thing in an emergency is not being able to explain to the emergency services where you are.

Another useful one (the only one I've actually used to date, thank heavens) is 1515.
This is the official emergency number for reporting forest fires to the Corpo Forestale, though I'm sure some of the other numbers would do just as well.
I was also stimulated by the excellent list provided above to research the 'missing' numbers. 114 appears to be a Pronto Soccorso number particularly for businesses to report accidents and emergencies. 117 is for the Guardia di Finanza, if you get a sudden 'fraud emergency' or perhaps if you want to shop someone for fiddling their taxes!

BUT you only need to remember 112............then be it Fire, Ambulance etc all will be sorted via the 112 service!
There you go
* 12 - Telephone Directory Assistance Number
* 112 - Carabinieri
* 113 - Emergency Police Help Number (also ambulance and fire)
* 115 - Fire Department
* 116 - A.C.I. (Italian Automobile Club) road assistance.
* 118 - Medical Emergencies
