Yes I read about this in July.Some illegal tips found in the hills leaking toxic waste into the river. Unfortunately this came at the same time a massive fire shut down the megola shopping center( near Chieti.) one Sunday. The fire resulted from a huge illegal tip of industrial waste catching light !Several arrests were made but I've not heard the outcome of the case?
As I can't stand Montesilvano its unlikely i'll ever want to swim there but that's hardly the point. I actually do feel extremly sorry for the politians who are going to have to sort out these massive problems. Providing they are not from the Del Turco mold- lets hope they can access the funding and political will to finally tackle this situation.

To them the only important thing is to dispose of the waste quickly and cheaply.
I think that you would never [or hardly ever] get them to understand anything else.
(Cost is important - thats why [in UK] when I pay to have my hedge trimmed [it is a big hedge] I make the trips to the tip with the trimmings in in my car - to save the cost of the 'industrial waste' charge that is levied if my 'hedge man' turns up at the tip in his van,. He would pass that extra cost on to me)

This is a part of the same problem that has been much in the news of late - rubbish in napoli. The camorra have been getting rid of toxic waste for businesses all over Italy (and beyond) for many years. They are always the cheapest - because they dump whatever they collect completely illegally. If by "they" you mean the camorristi, then yes - if by "they" you are meaning all Italians... hmmm....

I think that education has a lot to do with this. I don't have children going through the Italian school studies. Do they learn subjects such as "environmental studies" or anything in that line? If nothing can be done with the older generations, something positive would come from teaching students to respect nature.

Bear in mind also that the Italian schooling system starts much later than it does in the UK, where a lot of children now start at age 4. In Italy, they start at 6 - but continue much later (see the link in English above).

I actually do believe that the vast majority of Italians are horrified by this situation particularly as it is their children who are drinking or swimming in the toxic water.Locally to us Lettomanoppello has a very active environmental group who recently fought ( and sadly lost) the plans to build another quarry in the Maiella Nathional park. We also have well organised and vocal groups striving to ensure that seas around the coast of Abruzzo are protected from pollutin and rampant developement.
Yes it is the Mafia or camorra the who are responsible for disposing of this waste illegally or irresponsibly but the blame must also pass on to the local and national polititians who have allowed them to do this either through their own greed or laziness. It would not be possible for these illegal activities to continue with quite a few deaf ears and blind eyes would it ?:no:

Unfortunately, the situation is often that the politicians themselves are a part of one of the clans to start with. The problem is far deeper than just "pass another law" to solve/resolve it. It will take time - plenty of it - to disconnect politics from mafia control or influence, as well as a far stronger desire to do so than you will find in the higher (and not so high) echelons of politicians currently "in power". In my opinion, that is...
