General chat about Italy

Sounds as if there are restrictions on foreign cards Eliven. A bit similar to Enel suspending payments online with foreign cards due to fraud I read here a few months ago.

Can you not contact ebay???.

Ring the card supplier - the number should be on the back of the card - it is probably that the computer has stopped the payment as 'unusual' - in fact they may have tried to contact you already [on a UK number perhaps?]

They should sort it easily, once you've spoken to them

I have an Italian eBay account and cannot use my UK credit card. The credit card you use in ANY country must be the one where your credit card is billed and that should be your home (resident) address.

My UK bank statements and Visa are billed to an address in the UK, but my Italian eBay account is on my resident address here. So I have to use my Italian bank's Visa to pay. Had the same rigmarole with Paypal too!!!

Uk cards have not worked on Italian websites (vodafone, telecom italia, enel ) for the last 8 months or more, even when your registered address is in Italy, also a lot of debit cards are not accepted in the cash machines, but still have no idea why- I used to pay all my bills online but they won't let them through now. proper pain in the bum!

And Italian cards have the same problems with many UK sites! It can't be anything fundamental, because Amazon can manage perfectly happily.

Usually (in my experience) if you get on the phone and read the company the foreign credit card number they will accept it, it is just that they have implemented some annoying security rubbish on the websites.

(The e-bay Italia problem is much more likely to be down to CaroleB's analysis of the situation).

I think Carole B has the problem correctly identified, but, apparently now 80 per cent of card fraud now takes place in countries other than the issuing one so everyone has a point!
I have now received an email from Ebay offering other means of payment so must get my best translating brain together to see what can be done. Thanks everyone.

Far safer to open a paypal account

Paypal accounts are really rather brilliant - because (apart from trans border deals) it is really easy to credit someone else's credit card (even a private friend) - or even their bank account (if it is a trader linked to Paypal). And their rates are pretty fair (at least for small transactions - dunno about bigger sums). So - if you need a US credit card for a cheapo software deal ex US - use your mate's card (with permission!) and refund him via Paypal.

HOWEVER - though I have a Paypal account, linked to an Italian credit card - it does not work with e-bay Italia.

That's strange Charles, I've not had any problems with eBay.it using my Paypal account on my Italian bank Visa! I wonder why?

But I do agree - Paypal is brilliant. I find the charges are so small too when people are paying me... they only take 4.5% on payments 'to' me and nothing on payments 'from' me or my clients! Bank transfers would cost (lose) me far more!

Like CaroleB, I have had no problems with my credit card on PayPal. Yes, my credit card is an Italian bank issued card and my PayPal account is set up with my Italian address. I have, however, experienced problems paying some suppliers using the online credit card verification system. My wife has had the same problems with the same suppliers/systems, so we took it that the problem was an inter-bank issue, rather than a credit card problem, per se.

It's getting a bit ridiculous now.
After reading much about Enel, Telecom, etc, refusing payment from non Italian credit cards, I have today had a booking refused by Airone because I used a German mastercard!
Even when I spoke to them personally there was no way to book my flight.
The flight was operated by Alitalia.
How the hell do they expect to make money if they turn down potentional customers from aboad. :veryconfused:

Were you asked for a pin number? We had a few problems in the past with a foreign credit card in Italy because we never used our pin numbers. We only had to sign for it. After being told several times that they could not process our operation we spoke to our bank, got our pin number and we have not had a problem since then. Fingers crossed!

No Gala, just the usual number, expiry date and security code.
When the girl on the phone then asked what the card was she said it wa a problems because it was not an Italian card.
So much for the open market!

There is another thread outlining non Italian cards in Bancomats not being accepted too. It's a piece of absolute nonsense. Charles suggested getting a Postepay card as a solution from Poste Itaiene but you have to do this in person. You charge it up and it acts like VISA Electron apparently.
