10416 ADSL in rural Lazio - no phone line, no satellite required!

Just a post for information/recommendation, wasn't sure of the best place for it!

For the past year we have had 24/7 always-on unlimited 2MB download / 256KB upload broadband with a company called TecnoADSL Lazio for a flat rate of €29 pm (€50 attivazione una tantum and €90 installazione una tantum).

I just wanted to recommend the company and their services to others in the area (BTW I have no affiliation with them!), mainly because you do not need a phone line or satellite dish - just a clear line of site to one of their transmitters and a 25cm x 20cm antenna & cabling, installed and supplied by them.

We are in the hills above Rieti, and gave up on even a basic Telecom Italia phone line ages ago - in 2006 it worked intermittently for 3 months, then a storm took out 6 poles ... need I say more? :nah:

TechnoADSL Lazio have basically set up a very wide area wi-fi network across the Rieti province, using existing television transmitters on which to mount their wi-fi boosters. As long as you have a clear line of sight to their transmitter you can be connected.

Coverage by Comune: http://www.tecnoadsllazio.it/copertura_big_lazio.html

Bandwidth does not fluctuate significantly and it really is 2MB download speed. Their customer service is excellent - on the 2 or 3 occasions a bad storm has disrupted service it has been back up within a few hours (normal wind, rain etc. do not disrupt connection).

Basically, an Italian company that has seen a niche in the market, bringing a vital service to rural communities whose exchanges Telecom Italia will probably never upgrade (our Comune has 891 residents), at a decent price, and, in my experience, with excellent customer service and support.

I have recommended this company to friends all over Sabina and to our local carabinieri brigadiere who now has the station hooked up! It's also very satisfying to do the disdetta with Telecom (for a non-existant service) and move over to low-cost VOIP/Skype.

NB - you can't use VOIP (yet) for emergency calls.

Apologies for the long post!

General chat about Italy

Very interesting post, thankyou for the information and please do not apologise for its length.
It is all relevant.

We can say exactly the same when praising a firm we use based at Foligno in Umbria intro. We are near Lago Trasimeno ( a long way from Foligno) and luckily face the right mountain! This must be a boom industry in Italy and a missed opportunity for Telecom Italia.
