I suspect the site I have linked to is approved by Sarah Palin!!
(and it is updated only until 2003 - or earlier, since it is priced in Lire!)
Hi All,
Someone asked about air rifles on the wild boar thread, but rather that go off topic on that one I thought I'd start a new one.
Does anyone know how difficult it is to get a firearms licence in Italy - for rifles and hand guns I mean and what the procedure is? Someone told me that they are quite hard to get in Italy. Almost as difficult a proposition as in the UK in fact. Of course you can't own pistols at all in the UK since the government of the day overreacted after the Dunblane tragedy.
Can't remember whether I read this or whether someone told me it but is there not some proviso in Italian law for those who "may have reason to feel threatened" such as shopkeepers or those who have to carry cash to the bank etc., to have some kind of easier route to a gun licence?
Cheers,
Geraint.
Iasked our local maresciallo about this,he said for you? i said yes, he said hunting? nooo i said,he said you can have almost anything...pump rifles hand guns, automatics etc but make sure you kill them otherwise you end up in jail and they "live in your house" gun licences are granted rather than being an automatic process the local police have the last say they haave to be kept under lock and key in a steel cabinet (hunting guns too) ..it's not too difficult but you'd have to be living here and be a "good citizen"....i'd go for a pump rifle if i were you..

Anyone know anywhere in Italy I can buy a good cheap catapult?
If I could actually afford one, it might be a good way for me to follow a suggestion made on another thread and throw stones at my boar!
Though I suppose it's possible, depending on the scheda tecnica (high quality elastic?), that I might have to join a squadra and get a catapult licence?

Couldn't you manage with just a sling... it certainly takes less space and I am pretty sure you would not need a licence.
But if you really want to go boar hunting without the use of firearms or bows
Bows! Yes! Why didn't I remember that?
The last edition of la Caccia al Cinghiale (bimonthly, available at all good newsagents) had an excellent article on Caccia al cinghiale con l'arco, complete with a most tasteful photograph of a dead boar with a bow and arrows laid neatly and artistically across its recumbent carcase.
Even better (for the money-saving angle), the Unione Nazionale Arcieri Cacciatori records that almost all boar killed by archers in Italy in 2006 and 2007 were shot with a traditional bow. So I wouldn't even have to buy an expensive crossbow.
It's out to the trees with the whittling knife first thing in the morning!

Would it be possible just to talk him/her down?

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm afraid Charles Phillips pointed out the problems with that idea some time ago. Not speaking the same language as the boar, I might even be misinterpreted as making amorous advances.
But if you can recommend any good language courses in Cinghialese (preferably free and run by a local comune), I'd be very interested!

Just tell him that you are an accountant or a golfer, it will have the same effect :laughs:

Or default to shouting in English! Never fails...(and no, it wasn't a typo, I did mean shouting!) However, to get this thread back on topic, I'm just seeing the headline "Welsh Librarian shoots Albanian rapinatore" . C'mon, it isn't the Wild West.....just the land of Alitalia refuisng to die a death however many bullets!

Albanians are just so last decade!
For the sake of his bella figura, surely this year Welsh Librarian should be shooting Rumanian gypsies?

The current "targets" are Ghanaians, Liberians and Togans. Allegedly.
If you're serious about shotguns, then Beretta have an extremely low recoil semi automatic model in their range.
The Xtrema2 ideal for both hunting and sport shooting, It has all the benefits of a 12 round (11+1) autoloader (not pump action) with very low recoil, and can handle a number of different loads without the need for adjustment. Expect to pay around the $1500 - $2000 mark depending on specifications and finish.
As for personal sidearms, Semi automatics are sexy, and very 'Hollywood' , and have the advantage of having a larger magazine capacity than a revolver(between 7 & 15 typically), but they are prone to jamming if not maintained regularly and keeping the magazine permanently loaded will severely weaken the magazine spring and cause feed problems (usually at the most inopportune of moments). There is no quick way to load a automatic's magazine.
Revolvers however are simple to maintain and do not suffer form the same feed/loading problems of the semi -autos. They do not provide the same level of available rounds in an emergency (usually 5/6 rounds per cylinder), but with the aid of a speed loader the weapon can be brought to bear on target from empty to full in a only few seconds. Price wise, expect to pay $500 - infinity.
I disagree with pretty much everything you've said. An 11-round automatic shotgun is ludicrous for any conceivable hunting (by 11+1, I assume you mean that you'd be happy carrying the weapon with a round in the breech...).
And if I had to have a handgun, I'd take a modern auto over a revolver any time, principally for accuracy. Weakening of the magazine spring is just folklore. Otherwise the world's armies would be using something else.
Although I do remember Michael Caine being obliged to swap his automatic for a revolver in one of the films of the Len Deighton novels. That was 1965 though.

And there was little me thinking that all this talk of auto-loading 12 round shotguns was (in this context) an elaborate and very funny piece of humour.
Well, you live and learn!

131 wild boar killed last Sunday on the first day's hunting in my provincia (the season has started early due to the extensive boar damage to agriculture).
Just think what the cacciatori could have done with some rocket launchers. Might have been 500 boar and a few small villages wiped off the map!
I can't imagine that it's all that difficult to get a permit for a hunting rifle, given the number of Italians chasing after cinghiale and smaller game.
As far as a personal protection weapon is concerned, I have no idea. Given the American statistics, owning a handgun greatly increases your chances of death, so go ahead, make my day.
