10471 From 1 October Dogs banned from Italian Trains

As long as it doesn't apply to Guide Dogs, seems OK to me.

[seems to be the same ruling that of Air France have for the carriage of dogs in the passenger cabin]

It is an international rule that most airlines apply. Under 6kg and in an appropriate cage or special bag.
The thing that is a real pain is the vet's certificate dating less that 1 month.....

I think it is silly. Anybody wanting to travel with their dog on a train is more than likely to be a 'caring owner', and the dog is more than likely to have been protected by Frontline or some other anti-parastite product. Now, not only is this rule silly, it is counterproductive, because a Frontlined dog will (simply by being a dog) attract the FS fleas to itelf and quietly and inconspicuously cause the fleas to die.

If there are no dogs aboard the fleas will bite the humans.

Thanks Nardini I was just going to post that too....didn't I say once before... great minds etc!!! But I only have a 12 kilo dog not a 100 kilo one!!!

Out of interest, the new Italian regulations are not an exact copy of what Spain does. Sorry, I could not find an English version but you could put the text through one of the "translating" aids:

Basically, although the 6 kg rule applies for cabin travel, you can carry dogs of any size in their cages and there is no mention of the vet's certificate and its validity. All what they ask for is the "cartilla sanitaria" which is the pet's passport which contains chip number, registration and current vaccinations, etc.
I agree that pets travelling with their owners are all well kept and treated against all sorts of parasites.

The beauty of the ruling, for me, is quite simple - no loose dogs in the carriage.

No longer will I, [and others], have to put up with somebody's 'Darling Rover' trying to hump my leg whilst their owner says "Aah - look, he's just being friendly".

Now, if they could cage and gag small children as well - the life of a train traveller would be complete.

I like this idea! Maybe irresponsible pet owners will finally put their gloves on and clean up after their pooches... Not all areas have parks so pavements seem to be the next best thing! Let's not mention the litter, graffiti .... There should be a "Keep Italy Tidy " campaign... :wideeyed:
