10526 Animal farming

Hi, we have a property in Celia Messapica, Puglia and we would like to keep chickens, pigs and goats etc....Are the any licences needed to keep these such farm animals and if so where do we need go to get the necessary paperwork. Also, does anyone know of any breeders of farm animals in the Puglia region?

Hi Guys
The best bet is to have a chat with with your local town hall re keeping major livestock.........good luck

The local vet would be another source of information. I'm pretty sure there will be laws about keeping animals and that you will have your premises inspected by the sanitaria. I think you may also need make sure your commune deems that your property is ‘agricultural’.

Good points Nielo...also you may get charged for change of use back to agricultural......that might be a another little wrinkle

you won't have any problems for a few chickens but pigs (more than one) have to be registered, tagged, inspected ,you have to keep the matricola di stalla( thats a register of the sty) any deaths have to be repotrted and inspected, they have to be killed (thats if its more than 1) in the mattatoio thats the local abbattoir and transported back in refrigerated trucks etc,if you undertake any form of transformation that is not strictly for personal use including milk or cheese making etc then you'll have to build or convert a building to food norms to do it in,same goes for goats/sheep but in our region the limit there goes up to a max of 3,after which all the above comes into play again.if you intend to do this on a scale larger than say 1 pig and a few chickens you would be advised to go to your local branch of coltivatori diretti ,thats the local farmers union and enroll etc.
hope that helps...we have the t -shirt..
