10467 Bread oven/BBQ

Thinking of building a bbq/bread oven from reclaimed old sand stone from an old barn. I'm okay with the bbq, but wondered if there are any specs/requirements needed to build a good bread oven eg: size? shape? material?Any advice or previous threads would be appreciated.cheers

I know there is a UK website that shows detailed plans on how to build a pizza oven and also previous threads, neither of which I can remember at the moment but you certainly need to make sure that all the internal materials are fireproof and if it's a pizza oven it is best to make it dome shaped.

Think you will find most of the details you require here.

Any ideas on cleaning a wood burning oven not used for 20 years!!!

We have to rebuild roof and fit door but then we can use it only trouble is meantime snakes, rats and scorpians have lived in it! I suppose lighting a big fire and blasting the whole thing fr a few hours might do it?

sounds like a challenge, but I have seen completed ones and they look truly beautiful in the correct surroundings. Good luck

I would suggest asking an italian for advice. They just LOVE (especially the older men) these ovens and are ALL experts on 'how to, what to' cook ! That has been our experience!

We had a similar issue this spring. A local came to our rescue with some sound advice:

Empty it! Give it a general brush inside including the dome, then light increasingly large fires in there each day - starting off quite gentle and building up to the pizza-oven monster temperatures. It works fantastically well and cooks pizza these days in around 90 seconds!!
