the clapping is an american thing that seems to have found its way to europe. how many other professions get applauded for doing their jobs?
Seems like you had a good experience with RyanAir. It seems to vary. My most recent flight into Stansted from Brindisi was good, others have not been so. Lets hope its an ongoing improvement

Just noticed on the Ryanair website 'trumpets will be available to purchase on all flights'not just those from Italy from November the first.

Trumpets for all and mobile phones allowed on Ryanair flights..........now that's something to complain about!

Well, just hope they're on time tomorrow Torino-Stansted.... €20 return including all taxes - free ticket (or was it 1c - I can't remember), online check-in, hand baggage only....
My only experience of clapping was a -very- turbulent VC-10 flight from Washington DC to LHR, so a long time ago. The pilot absolutely greased it on arrival and we were all mightily impressed and very relieved! Not as relieved as I was on ignoring the seat-belt signs and the stewardesses during the flight and then having to hold on to the seats and then the loo.....

Just booked flights from East Midlands to Pisa in December, persuaded by Ryanair's free flights promise. I'm afraid they weren't free. The total return cost for the two of us was.....4pence, all included! It really is worth getting an Electron card so there is no booking fee.

Hi Pam,
How/where do you get an electron card? Booked flights for end of the month - cost £10 ............... plus £16 debit card fees!
Ciao, Helen

I think Italians have always applauded on landing. At least for as long as I've been flying to and from Italy (30 years on and off)

The plane coming home was mainly Italians, no doubt returning from a very wet weekend in England, no wonder they applauded to return to the sunshine, I joined in and had to be prevented from kissing the ground when we disembarked, returning to the UK after nearly 3 years away made us more certain of our decision to live out here...lucky really, and probably the rain, wind and general glumness of England as we saw it re enforced that view.
Has anyone else been back after a time here it would be interesting to hear what their experiences were, perhaps another thread?.

Helen, I got my electron debit card from the co-op bank. It's handy as you can put cash in it at a post office and use it the same day. I've used it 3 times now. There is no charge at all to use it.

Angie, today was absolutely gorgeous, sun, blue skies and very warm. We saved it till you went home then you would be happy to go back!!! :laughs:

We also just got one of the 4p flights - thinking about getting an Electron card. My OH says I am mean as the £16 is 'nothing' considering what we are getting. Cost that much to get a taxi into Bournemouth!
Anyway I am well pleased and will take advantage of the cheappies while they are still available.

Yes, the clapping is very much an Italian thing when flying. Strangely, I've never noticed it on BA but coming in to Rome on even long haul foreign carriers, the Italians lead the applause. Remember once sitting next to a Singaporean couple on SQ who were totally startled by it all but quickly put their hands together and joined in the clapping. Being a very nervous flyer, I personally think it's a great tension reliever. V

Especially nice for the crew - who let's face it have a pretty thankless job. I always smile and say hello when I get on and say thank you when I leave. I have never had surly service - I think you get what you give! I have a retail business and I value and appreciate how people are treated. I don't get too many 'awkward' customers thank goodness but I have seen some very obnoxious characters when flying. There was a couple on our flight a fortnight ago - the staff were extremely patient with them - I would have opened the door and chucked them out as they were so rude even though they were about 70 ish. :laughs::laughs:

Hi
Thanks for this info, do you need a co-op bank account to get one? As it is a debit card I wonder if it gives the insurance cover for the items/flights purchased as a credit card does.

Ryanair brought in the trumpets several years ago and the clapping is not unusual nowadays though getting less and less common every year
