10648 Do owls have a death wish?

At night driving on the country roads of Le Marche I quite often come across owls sitting in the middle of the road and i have to swerve or stop suddenly to avoid hitting them. Why do they do this and is it peculiar to marchigianian owls?

You're a tad lucky, we had a barn owl take up residence in our house whilst we were in UK - cor what a mess! Came in (and out thank goodness) via the chimney. One has a favourite perch on the telephone pole each evening. Not noticed any suicidal one tho'.
